Surveying Vultures in Uruguay, December 2009

Thank author of this post/commentOur first survey route paralleled the Atlantic coast northeast of Montevideo, taking us through the rolling hills of the Sierra de Minas (the source of the country?s bottled water), and winding up in the colonial town of Rocha.

For as yet unexplained reasons, Black Vultures are extremely rare in Uruguay, and three of the four we encounter during our first day in the field are feeding happily inside a roadside aviary in a municipal zoo in the town of Minas.  Turkey Vultures, on the other hand, are overwhelmingly abundant.

We see 161 of them, 157 more than the 4 that we saw during our ?winter-time? survey in June.  The dramatic increase suggests the birds migrate in the region.  We also see and count small numbers of Chimango and Crested Caracaras, two species of opportunistic, scavenging birds whose behavior resembles that of crows and ravens, but whose closest relatives are falcons.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 643089557
