| fly, rental car and overnighting the month of October I am planning a scouting trip end of Sept.beginning of Oct.for about 4 weeks and was wondering if anyone has a good tip for airline tickets to Uruguay? I am an experienced traveller but was shocked by the high fare and stopovers to get there (from NYC).Was thinking of renting a car to drive up the coast and maybe interrior to explore different places. What would be the best place to rent a car and how much is it to rent in Uruguay? Is it OK for someone like me that don't know Uruguay to get in a car and drive around the Country? Finally; Should I stay in one place, like Montevideo and do day trips or find a Hotel/Motel to overnight in different places? THAT WAS A LOT OF QUESTIONS. Thankful for any good advice I get. Paul |

American Airlines flies non-stop from Miami, but only 3 or 4 days a week... so you gotta pick the right day or it will have a stop in Buenos Aires.Copa Airlines flies non-stop from Panama City. Taca flies non-stop from Lima, Peru. Pluna flies non-stop from many places in South America. LAN flies non-stop from Santiago Chile. So you'll need to plan on a stop in one of those places... and whatever it takes to get there too. Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |

Play it by ear... if you go some place like Salto you'll need to stay over night there... Punta del Este is an easy day trip. Don't make your plans to specific. Here are two different people's experiences:First one said he planned to visit every department via Bus and spend a week or so going it. After a day he was back and said it's all the same, nothing, boring. Second one, rented a car and drove approximately 5, 000 km during a month of exploring the country in depth and had many amazing stories, no of which included the words "nothing" or "boring". Its different strokes for different folks.Airfares to Europe have more than doubled over the last two years... I reckon that the airlines are cashing in on our current boom. In the days when I used to rent cars here I found that the best airport discount prices were available via internet price comparison sites. Except for MVD and the coast to Punta del Este traffic is usually very light. In late September/October hotels shouldn't be crowded so you can probably do as you please when it comes to places to stay. I did a mammoth grand tour by car when I first arrived... MVD, the coast, much of the interior, the river cities from Paysandu southwards and only discovered east Colonia on my way back to the airport. If you'd excuse an Irish-ism... the more you look, the more you'll see :-) |

I was over there october last year and rented a car for 2 weeks from budget rentals and found them easy to deal with and reasonably priced. It was a graet way to see the country as we had no fixed plans.Driving over there was a experience as we drive on the other side road and had alot of fun learning the road rules. |

Thanks Matt and everybody for your info. Budget, Eurocar and a couple of others I checked, had fairly good prices. Sometimes there can be small local rental firms very reasonable that only the locals know about. That is what I was trying to find out. Any Suggestions on good, clean and safe places to stay along the coast and interior and just as important; where not to stay, if you had that experience. Thanks, Paul. |

...I have used Dollar Car Rental who i found very satisfactory. They do not have an office in the airport but a shuttle bus transports you to the office nearby. I have a feeling that they may have been bought out earlier this year so one needs to check. Keep in mind that most vehicles are 'stick shift'....automatics cost more and are hard to come by.....I used the Hotel Genoves in Piriapolis.... clean, close to restaurants. Enjoy your trip. |
