When is the best time to travel to Uruguay?
| When is the best time to travel to Uruguay?I heard and read from most websites how beautiful Uruguay is and so this made me curious onto the culture and people of Uruguay. But I just don't want to go anytime to Uruguay. I want my visit there to be worth while. I want my visit to be memorable. I like a feast! I want to visit Uruguay at its best with all the colors and celebration. So when is the best time to travel to Uruguay? |
| "When to visit Uruguay?"
I think everyone has a different favourite time of year, it just depends... Spring in Montevideo is so beautiful (October/November). Almost every street is lined with huge trees and during the spring and early summer these bloom in to incredible purple jacaranda trees, bright pink bourgonvilias, white magnolias and more. Also I think there is a great buzz in the city just before high summer hits. Its coming up to Christmas, the weather is warming up, people are excited to take their holidays...there are always lots of people sitting out in front of their houses and there is a great neighborhood vibe. Also if you go up the coast in November the weather is already warm but there are no crowds and you can get better prices. My other favourite time of year here is the tail end of summer which also coincides with Carnival! In February the weather is still hot and the carnival events are taking place all over the city. The big ones happen at the beginning of February in Montevideo, and a little later up along the coast. Also the crowds are much less in February along the coast but things are still open until before summer where everyone is in preparation for high season (December/January). Those are just MY favourite times of year, really you could visit any time and like Uruguay, its beauty is perennial. However maybe avoid July, August, September...it rains quite a bit, is very damp, and is the coldest time of year here (but rarely if ever colder than 7 celcius). Enjoy your travels! |

For a good chance of nice weather and not too many tourists, I'd advise November/early December and March. On the other hand Uruguayo weather can be very unpredictable so you can't count on getting particular conditions at any particular time of year. |
| ""when to visit""
I travel to Uruguay every winter (July and August) and I love it! Winter is mild in Uruguay compared to winter in Europe or North America. It does get chilly, a bit damp and it can rain quite a bit, but it's never freezing, and it does not snow. There are plenty of sunny days in the Uruguayan austral winter and people can enjoy going out for long walks on the beach or visit outdoor flea markets, etc. |
| "When is the Grape Harvest?"
Hi, I am trying to put together a calendar so we can plan a visit. When is Autumn? Roughly when does it begin and end? What and when are the Autumn Festivals? In particular, when is the grape harvest and the equivalent of Oktoberfest in the northern hemisphere? What is the weather like during Fall? When do the rains start? Thanks for your help! Pete |
| "One last thing"
Is there something akin to foilage season in which the leaves turn color? Roughly speaking when does it occur? One last question. Is there an autumn festival of note in Buenos Aires? I just want to know how to plan a visit at such a time. Thanks! |

In these parts, most of the bigger deciduous trees are varieties imported from the Old World and although you do get a colour change before the leaves fall off, different varieties seem to do it at different times. My ombues (not really trees but giant grasses which look like trees) only start shedding after the night frosts in mid/late winter yet the willows and poplars usually do it in May. Our most popular big trees (eucalyptuses) tend to shed leaves throughout the year and keep most of their leaves through the winter. |
