Tips for Salto

Thank author of this post/commentHello all,

I was thinking about going to Salto to enjoy the thermal baths for a day or two. Has anyone ever been there? Where did you stay? Are the baths far from the centre of town? Are there regular buses? What else is worth seeing in Salto apart from the baths? Any tips or advice are welcome!

Elaine: you'll probably like Salto. It's a big town for Uruguayan standards (pop. 100, 000+) with lots of shops, restaurants, a few museums, very interesting architecture, a beautiful riviera and...thermal baths! I was there a few years ago. I went by bus. I stayed at the Horacio Quiroga hotel right by the Salto Grande dam. I had to hire a cab to take me there from the city. They have thermal baths there. I also went across the river to Concordia, Argentina, to check it out. I wasn't too impressed with that town but it was something to do and I actually enjoyed going over the international bridge. Enjoy your trip!

Note: I visited Salto three times. First as kid, on a school trip, by train. This was a most wonderful experience. Loved it!! The second time as an adult, with friends, by bus from MVD. It took us several hours. It was a bit tiring but, I was younger then and I didn't mind it at all. The last time I was there I took a propeller plane (made in Russia) who got me there from Carrasco in just a 1 hour or so. I paid something like U$180 or so, I don't really remember, but it was worth it!

Elaine, we spent a couple of nights at Dayman last year. Dayman is a small spot, about 10kms from Salto. There are a few hotels in town, and a water park with quite a few thermal pools. Acuamania is also in Dayman, which is more like water slides and pools. There are cute little shops and a night market. Good spot for a couple of nights, and everything is within walking distance if you don't have a car. We went at the end of July last year, so it was really cold (for us Aussies), but it was really nice to spend time in the water - so nice and warm!

Enjoy!

Are the hot springs open year round? Do you have to stay in a hotel that has access, or are they open to the public? What is the cost of using the thermal pools? Does the train run daily from Montevideo? How does the cost compare to taking the bus? Thanks!

The Brits built us a splendid railway system 100+ years ago but in a lightly populated land like Uruguay railways are not economic so now its all but dead. These days we use the buses.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 1128214409
