I know there is a non-stop flight from Miami to Montevideo on American Airlines. But I couldn't get it to come up on the websites to purchase plane tickets. They wanted to send me by way of Santiago Chile with stops in Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, and Panama.
I finally called American Airlines and I learned that the flight from Miami to Montevideo only departs on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
The non-stop from Montevideo to Miami only departs on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
If I was careful to request flights on those days of the week, the flight booking sites would send me through Miami on the non-stop flight.
LAN is supposed to have a non-stop from Miami to Montevideo, but I couldn't find it. I placed a call to the airlines, and I was told they don't do that flight any more. Too bad, because their prices are lower

The problem you are having is they don't fly daily non stop to montevideo. Call American and ask which days they fly non-stop and then check online for those dates.Copa will fly though Panama City and Taca through Lima. There are more non-stops to Buenos Aires and then you can catch another flight or the ferry for Uruguay.

Excellent advice Wilbur Corncob! Any idea on either the price of a flight or the ferry ride from Buenos Aires?

The bus/ferry (bus from Montevideo to Colonia, Ferry to BA) is around US$75 round trip. You check your baggage at the bus station and pick it up in BA. The ferry directly from Montevideo to Buenos Aires is a bit more. The direct ferry is probably a little quicker... but either way its around 3 hours...
Pluna was advertising round trip flights for something like US$60 with 30 day advance booking. But when I looked at flying Pluna the other day I couldn't find any available flights (which might just be their website that always gives me grief).
I don't know if that price was with or without prices. 3-1/2 years ago, I booked a round trip flight on American BA-MVD and it was around US$50... with taxes just under US$100.
Kayak is showing a fare of US$223 on Aerolineas Argentina. (their fares can vary greatly depending on where you are a resident).

Are non-stop flights cheaper than ones with stops? You would think so, since there is less manpower needed to stop in different airports. Is this the case?
