Most see attractions?
| Most see attractions? While in Uruguay are there any particular sites that I really should see? What is there to do for fun? |
| I have heard that the best place to go is Montevideo. It is supposed to be beautiful. If you have time check out Maldonado as well. |
| In Uruguay as far as i know accommodation can be cheap, around 30 euro per day, is that true? |
| Probably, but the hotels are usually priced in Pesos or Dollars.I also deleted your link, because it is pretty stupid to link to a web page about hotels in Italy when discussing hotels in Uruguay!?!? It is also not a good idea to use the word "Cheap" when discussing prices at it is all relative. For example, in Montevideo you might find it difficult to find an hotel for much under US$40 or so. But in the Philippines you might easily find one for US$13. So, is a $35 hotel cheap? |
| I think $35 is very cheap for a hotel especially of it's nice. I would absolutely love to visit Uruguay. Maybe one day I will save up enough money to travel around down there. |
| Here are some tourist spots that I had gooled: * Mercado del Puerto: It houses numerous restaurants and the market here is always very crowded. * Colonia del Sacramento: Filled with restaurants, bars and a happening nightlife. * Termas de Dayman: It is a bath complex in northwestern Uruguay. * Casa Pueblo: An art gallery located at Punta Ballena. The other tourist destinations of Uruguay are: * Colonia Suiza * Cerro Pan de Azucar * Punta del Este * River Delta * Museo Didactico Artiguista * SOS Rescate de Fauna Marina * Punta del Diablo |
| Here are some must see in Uruguay Things to Do and See # Take a walking tour of the Ciudad Vieja, or the old colonial city, starting from the Plaza Independencia to see: 1. The huge statue of Uruguay’s greatest hero, José Gervasio Artigas, marks the spot of his mausoleum. The changing of the guard at noon is a popular sight. 2. From there, visit the Palacio Estevez which until 1095 served as the Palacio de Gobierno. The 26 story building next to is the Palacio Salvo, once the tallest building in South America. See the Teatro Solis, inaugurated in 1856 and the site of much of Montevideo’s artistic events. 3. Connecting the Ciudad Vieja to the rest of Montevideo from the plaza, is La Puerta de la Ciudadela, the colonial military defense. |
| "Things to see and do in Montevideo"
There are so many great things to see and do in Montevideo, but because its not a typical "guide-book" style city where you tick the boxes of all the big attractions many people think there's nothing here.Check out the candombe drumming groups playing in the streets every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings throughout Barrio Sur and Palermo (however know they take a few months off after the month of carnaval in February). My favourite groups are "La Melasa" (the all female comparsa) they play Sunday evenings around sunset in the area of Parque Rodo/Palermo (they start at the steps on the end of Blanes). My other favourite is "De Isla de Flores", many say this is the best comparsa in the city...they start at Isla de Flores and Gaboto on Sunday evenings around sunset (therefore the time changes depending on time of year). If you like contemporary art check out the Subte museum under Plaza Entrevero (also known as Plaza Fabini) along 18 de Julio. The Museum of Fine Arts is also nice and worth a look (though quite small, its also close to the beautiful Botanical Gardens in El Prado district so you can do both together). The exact address is Avenida Millan 4015. Another little gem is the central cemetery on Gonzalo Ramirez. Keep in mind that this is an actual cemetery that people visit so be respectful not touristic...but it is open to the public until 4.30 on weekday eves and the memorials are really very beautiful. It is a very peaceful place. Of course then there's the things you will see in guide books - the food in the mercado del puerto is great, check out the mausoleum under the Artigas statue as Maya suggested and definitely take a stroll along the rambla - Uruguayan sunsets rarely fail to disappoint! |
