Comment #109/27/11 15:32Rural east Colonia departmento | "Driving lessons/tests"
I've seen a few driving school cars when visiting MVD but I've never seen one down here in rural Colonia. As far as I know the usual practice down here is to ask a family member or a friend to give you lessons. Each departmento has its own version of driving tests and each produces its own booklet concerning the rules of the road. I took driving tests (you need a different licence for each class of vehicle you want to drive) here in Colonia. Because I had a valid UK licence, I didn't have to actually drive a car or ride a motorbike. I had to pass a medical which involved reading out a line of letters, the doctor asking me "Are you well?" and me saying "Yes I am." Each category then required an A4 sized paper with a written tick box test on the rules of the road. Because you only have to pay if you pass, the examiner makes sure that you do. If you meet a question to which you are unsure of the answer, you can ask your fellow testees, phone a friend or ask the examiner to explain the question whereupon (s)he will tell you the answer. The medical test is slightly more thorough for the over 60s. I'm told that in MVD the medical exam is much more serious but that you don't have to take the written test. |
| "Spam!"
The original post was spam... but that's ok... great answer Patrick... and for the spammers... go ahead and make stupid posts to drop a link... and we'll turn your stupid post into something great for our forum and members and zap your link!Aside, not only is your link zapped from your post, but blocked on all of the 490 websites in our network... and if you had half a brain you could have made an intelligent post on an appropriate site and been able to promote your site, effectively. Anyway, back to driving in Uruguay. You can also (in Montevideo anyhow), get your U.S. License converted into an Uruguay one without a driving/written test.. but you'll need the medical exam. Comment #309/27/11 16:24Rural east Colonia departmento | "I thought he wanted info on Uru driving schools"
Silly me and silly him. There is not much chance of anybody who reads this forum wanting to acquire a US driving licence :-)Each departmento takes a slightly different approach to foreign licence conversions and testing. Colonia insists on the written test (though you don't actually have to know the answers) and MVD takes the medical exam seriously but Colonia doesn't. Heaven knows what they do in Trinidad, Melo, Artigas and Cerro Chato. If I had the time, it would be fun to take a driving test tour of the ROU and see whether its possible to acquire a full set of all the 19 possible car (non professional) driving licences. Its the sort of silly pointless challenge that appeals to me. :-) |
