| Importing seeds I'm not sure which section this should be in, so I'll put it here.We have a lot of seeds. They're all heirloom seeds. We'd like to bring them with us in our luggage. But I suspect this will be severely frowned upon. So what are the rules for this? If I declare them, will they allow it? Or is it asking for trouble? brian |
| "What is a lot?"
You should have no problems, unless you have massive quantities that obviously look to be for resale. If they are in your regular luggage and not, say in a marked box, nobody at the airport will look twice.I do not even remember there being a section on the entrance form regarding declaring anything. Once your luggage is retrieved at the airport (Carrasco, Montevideo), you will have to put them through an x-ray scanner before exiting the airport, but this never seems extremely monitored. I just flew in with many heirloom seeds last week and had no issues whatsoever. |
| "cardboard boxes"
A cardboard box is a sure way to get something inspected by customs! Once my ex-wife had "a lot" of fabric in her suitcase and it was inspected by Uruguayan customs. The conversation went kinda like this:Customs: "It's too much" Her: "It's to make decorations" Customs: "Ok". An American friend brought in a bunch of suitcases, maybe 10. The luggage was delayed and when he got to the airport there were 2 or 3 that customs wanted to see in. One was plum full of vitamin supplements and they had no problem with that (through if you receive vitamins by mail it can be a big hassle). He also had a desktop computer and two monitors. The second monitor was a big hassle as they insisted he planned to sell it. A Uruguayan friend that went to help translate finally convinced customs that he actually used 2 monitors for his work. The bottom line is probably not to take more seeds than you can lose or argue is for your own garden. Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |

Disregarding the legality/illegality for a moment... many seeds seem to dislike being X-rayed. In my experience, most survive better after arriving in a passenger's pocket or by post than they do after being put through baggage x-ray machines which seems to much reduce the germination rates. |
| "Effects of x-rays on seeds and legality of import"
After a quick check on the effects of x-rays on seeds I find that it does not seem to have a negative impact, and even seems to have a positive effect on lettuce (60% increased growth). Next time I ask them to x-ray my seeds longer. The study can be read at plantphysiol dot org (annoying not to be able to link sources easily) The legality seems to favor melon seeds that are not prevalent in Uruguay, which is great, as mine are mostly heirloom melons. More info can be found (in Uruguayan) on the website of the ministry of Ganadería Agricultura y Pesca. Other seeds (semillas) do not fare as well legally. More at the website of the Ministry of Tourism. Informacion Practica -> Preguntas Frecuentes -> ¿Qué alimentos puedo ingresar a Uruguay? (fourth one down - website might also work in english). But again, you will not be dealing with the TSA, so a reasonable quantity should pass through without issues. Good luck. |

Interesting reading on that site.I can only speak from personal experience over this... 6 horse chestnut seeds (conkers) in suitcase = none sprouted but 4 in the pocket managed 100%. A packet of extra strong Thai chili seeds in suitcase = approx 20% success but the packet in the pocket scored 95%+. Perhaps baggage scanners emit more than just x-rays? |

Living in the Land of Smiles gave me the taste for them. Last November I was asked to taste and comment on a number of Colonia cheeses but years of eating "spicy" dishes have burned out my taste buds so they all tasted of not-very- much to me :-) |
