| How about airport security? Does anyone know if the security measures at the airport in Montevideo are as extreme as they are in the US? If not, what are they? |

Carrasco seems to be doing the usual European-style security theater with walk-thru metal detectors for passengers and the scanning of hand luggage and hold baggage. I've seen no sign of the whole body scanners which I hear are in use at certain US airports. Two years ago I happened to be lunching at the first class restaurant in the old terminal building which offered a fine view of the anti-terrorist practice session which was being put on to impress the old but much decorated US military gent at the next table. The event was a complete shambles... the airport staff were suitably made up with horrid wounds and were supposed to be the terrified hostages confined inside an aged parked Hercules but were hanging about outside drinking mate, making mobile calls and chatting under the wing on the grounds that it was too hot to remain inside while the "terrorists" (US special forces) were shouting a lot and trying to restore orderly hostage behaviour but were being ignored by the hostages who weren't taking the game seriously. The aged Uru rescue Hughie managed to get half way across the airport but suffered a technical problem and landed heavily right in front of a very smoky fire engine which was making best speed towards the terrorist/hostages... maybe with the intent of hosing them down. A bus containing Uru soldiers then ignored the terrorists/hostages and diverted to help sort out the Hughie and the fire engine as black smoke was emerging from one or possibly both. I really wish that I had videoed the event :-) The senior US soldier had his head in his hands and finally left the restaurant shaking his head as he seemed unable/unwilling to watch the farce any longer. |
| "Old Airport"
Security in the old airport was done by the Air Force, I haven't taken notice in the new one. Seems to be a pretty smooth flow and if you set off the metal detector you get frisked with a handle held unit.Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |
| "Its nice"
Last time I was arriving in Montevideo I wandered through and put the bags through the scanners and was about to approach the customs bloke because I had declared things on the entry document, mostly food, but he just waved me through with a smile. I don't believe the paperwork had been even looked at that time.Looking at my passport photo I don't reckon I would let someone like that into my country. I must say it is nice to be in a place where there may be a bit less need for security. Expert Page: House Sitters for Uruguay |
| "That gives me hope"
One of the main reasons I don't fly is the draconian security measures taken at US airports these days. The other is the way they treat passengers like sardines, attempting to jam as many as possible into the cabin. I haven't had much luck finding a boat ride to the ORU. So, I was thinking that if I could find a boat ride to another country closer to the US, I could then fly the rest of the way. As another possibility, though one I don't relish, I could drive to Mexico and fly from there. The thought of entering Mexico these days doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling at all, especially in a car alone. Thanks guys. |
| "arrival"
When you arrive you first go to the immigration line. It is fairly modern. They have a box that displays a number of the immigration clerk ready for you. The only problem is many people end up standing in front of the box and hear the chime but don't see the number immediately. Then you go to baggage claim. Then you have to go through the duty free shop and get bombarded with perfume smells. Customs involves putting your bags through an x-ray machine until they decide to do a more detailed inspection. The airport taxi's have an official rate which I think is slightly more than double the official rate for Montevideo taxis. Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |
| "Get on with the plan!"
"One of the main reasons I don't fly is the draconian security measures taken at US airports these days"Come on man, stop making excuses. You want to get the hell out of dodge, then get! Don't make silly excuses about the airport. You have a vision of a better life, pack your bags and go. Just grin and bear it for a few minutes while you deal with the jerks at the airport. Give them a false smile, false thank you, knowing all that attitude is behind you. Move forward in your life! |

On the day I left the UK for good, I encountered a particularly obnoxious Jamaican security 'droid who searched my hand luggage, found my home made ham and mustard sandwiches and said I couldn't take them through because mustard was a liquid and should have been carried in the correct sort of regulation plastic bag.I gave him a cool stare before remarking that "I and I've too long in Babylon's slavery." Give him his due, I got a big grin, was waved through and the mustard was ignored :-) |
| "Some things I just won't do"
The title pretty much says it. I'm sure we all have some things we just won't do. It isn't going through customs on arrival in Montevideo that I don't like, it is going through all you have to go through to get on a plane here. I don't mind going through a metal detector or having my bag x-rayed. I have taken my wife to the airport to go back to the Philippines a couple of times and remember thinking to my self that if it were me, I would just leave the airport and go back home. I couldn't get out of that place fast enough. |
