First Time Visitor to Uruguay

Hi to Everyone!

I will be arriving in Montevideo on September 1, Lord willing and stay for a week. It is my first time and I will be traveling alone. I would like to see as much of Uruguay as possible, at a reasonable price, and safely, of course.

Can anyone recommend an itinerary for while I am there? For example what I should absolutely see, where I should absolutely go (the budget is NOT unlimited as most of it has been spent on airfare and hotel).

In addition, I would like to know what type of clothing to pack. I know it is the end of winter. Do I need to bring boots, a coat, or would a good sturdy sweater and some scarves just about do it?

Any information would be appreciatejd. Looking forward to hearing from all you wonderful people out there.

...Oh...I forgot to mention...one reason I am coming is that it is on my list of places under consideration for retirement, so I need to see it with more than a tourist's eyes.

Thanks much.

Thank author of this post/comment"Warm clothes"

You never quite know what the weather is going to do here but in my view, it will pay you to bring a parka or a warm rain-proof coat for early September. It also pays to have some cooler clothing in case I'm wrong :-)

I live well away from most "attractions" but if you're staying in MVD and enjoy eating meat, then the former meat market in the old city opposite the customs house is worth a visit.

"Thanks for your response"

Thanks for the feedback, Patrick. That was helpful. I take it I can leave the boots at home and be prepared otherwise.

Can anyone offer any ideas on safe night life for a lady traveling alone? I suspect the hotel will not have a lot going on if anything, at night. I live a conservative lifestyle so I am not looking for clubs or wild partying; perhaps listening to a band; or watch a performance; or even a choir....

Thanks again.

Tks for the info. Seems like poor planning on my part. I was so focused on getting away after a long stretch of 13 hour days that I forgot the weather. Then again, being a glass half full person, I'll just be prepared and not let the weather deter me (although I hate the cold).

Additional info regarding an itinerary are welcome. Perhaps I might even stop in at the ex-pat meeting I read about.

:-)

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 1554185124
