Drinkable water.

Thank author of this post/commentIn Uruguay, there is one and only water service run by the gov through OSE (Obras Sanitarias del Estado). Wherever there is OSE services (in all towns and villages) you can drink it without problems. OSE warranties it's drinkable. When there's no OSE services (for example, rural houses), water is taken from wells. Uruguay is quite an unpolluted country, where rural underground water is generally clean. However, where there isn't a sewage system, a device called "pozo negro", consisting in a deep underground chamber, is used to send the toilet drainage. This would naturally filter down, but in some cases where the well is near or the characteristics of the soil lead the drainage directly to the well, they can the cause of well contamination. That's why usually owners of rural facilities test the water at OSE to be sure it's ok, before drinking it. This also used to happen in some beaches of the Atlantic coast that had illegally built beach houses with no OSE service and no sewage. These days most of those already have OSE service. Probably the one of the exceptions left is Cabo Polonio. So if you go to Cabo Polonio, and rent a house, ask the owner whether their well's water is drinkable, or simply use mineral bottled water. Otherwise, as a tourist you are very unlikely to be exposed.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 3655164917
