Solera from Earth - 03/22/10 01:58
Hello, I am flying into Montevideo this April 1st to explore Uruguay as a possible country to live in...Everything will be new as this is my first experience of S. America. I speak spanish.Which pension or small hotel would be safe to go to arriving after 10PM at night from airport?...
What would you recommend to do in Montevideo or in the area during the Easter week??
Is the Montevideo expat group gathering during the Easter weekend?
Does someone know individuals or a group of people doing permaculture or growing organic food, growing medicinal plants etc..an artist village
Any recommendation in these areas would be so appreciated
Solera

"Sunday Meetings"
Since I started the Sunday Expat meeting in Nov of 2005... it has met *EVERY* Sunday without fail... I've of course not made it to every meeting, but they have happened without exception. In the rare situations where the restaurant we regularly meet in is closed we put a sign on the door and meet in a different place within a block so you should have no worries.
You can check the upcoming schedule of the Sunday meetings (and other) on the meetings page here:

"Artist Village"
Hi SoleraWith regards to the artist village that you were wondering about, there is an area in Rocha - Sierras de Rocha, which is a place you might be interested in. Below is a link to an article that I found in El Pais, and in that article, is a link to a website with a bit of info about the area.
Hopefully Bruce will see your question, because he teaches Permaculture, and he knows a lot more about the Sierras.

"permaculture"
Hello SoleraAs Tamara said there is a community 16km outside of Rocha on the 109.There are about 35 people there at the moment with new people arriving all the time. If you are into natural building and permaculture you will love it.
There is a permaculture course being run there very soon but i think you may miss it.
I am a ecology and permaculture teacher and will be moving to this area early next year with plans to set up some kind of school to teach from.
If you want i can give you some contacts so you can organise a visit.
Please email me on this address.

"Arriving during Semana Santa"
Hi Solera, Welcome to Uruguay! I'm guessing you arrived yesterday?
I just wanted to give you a heads up that Montevideo is not always this quiet and dead so don't be scared that all the shops and most of the restaurants are closed! During Semana Santa/Easter Week (or semana de turismo/tourism week as its known here) everyone leaves the city and heads off to the beach. On the bright side its a lovely time to wander the rambla or lay on the beach here in the city because you'll have it all to yourself!
Hope to see you on Sunday at the meeting in Fellinis!
Elaine
