| Buses to Bolivia & cheaper hotels in Western Uruguay Does anyone know if Paysandu has any hotel/hostels or some places to stay that are similarly priced ? Also the same question stands for Salto and Colón, AR. I was hoping to bus it out of Montevideo to Bolivia and see a few things along the way. The thing is, I am also wanting to avoid going through Buenos Aires just for it's grand bus terminal and catch one of it's coaches in route somewhere else along the the way. Maybe I'd catch one of the international bus lines going through Santa Fe, Cordoba, Salta, or wherever. In part for this same reason, some months back I got unexpectedly stuck in Mercedes for a couple of nights when trying to get over to Guayleguaychu for my Argentina trip rest stop. I was lucky to find a cheap place to stay just a couple of blocks from the bus station. I wish I could remember the name of it. The hotels I looked into the next day were all at least triple the money of where I stayed. I'm glad I was stuck there for two nights because it seemed like a nice place that I wouldn't mind returning to. |

2 "one-dollar-sing" places listed in the Bradt Guide to Uruguay:Concordia, Ave 18 Julio984, phone: 72 22417 Hospedaje Sosa, Sarandi 1039 esq Montevideo. No phone. Both are 8-10 blocks from the bus terminal. A closer place ($$) is Hotel La Posada, Varela 566 esq Solis. ph: 72 27879. Breakfast included. Wherever you stay, please report back on your lodgings, we will be doing something similar (though not as far as Bolivia) in April. |

| "More on cheaper sleeps in Mercedes"
Thanks Jerry. Ok then. So for the lower cost places in Mercedes: 1] Upon leaving the bus terminal through the doors facing the taxis and park plaza, you should go left. The street name on Google maps says it's called Don Bosco. About three and a half blocks on the right side is a house which I believe has a sign hanging outside. I don't know what you call this kind of place since it there weren't any dorms with bunk beds but there was a kitchen, yard, and rooms with their own bathrooms. Maybe it's a hospedaje or posada ? About two or three doors further down on the corner is a deli-bakery that's open fairly late. 2] While walking along the lovely rambla or riverfront (said to be recently renovated), I stumbled upon a less pricey place, maybe was a hostel or hotel. It's either between Colon & Artigas, or with a block or so from one of these cross streets. Later I found the following two items on a web search. Can't say though how current the info is. 3] Hotel Mercedes (Tel:23204; Giménez 659; without bathroom per person US$9/6.50) An exc. deal right in the center of town, with a courtyard. The rooms have cable TV a quickly. Reservations are a good idea. 4] Club Remeros Mercedes (Tel:22534; De la Rivera 949; dm US$5-6) The restaurant at this sports club near the river (which also offers hostel accommodation) is open morning, noon and night, serving a varied menu. Downstairs there’s a bar, a half-decent restaurant and a jumble of pool, ping-pong and fusbol (table soccer) tables, sporting trophies and mounted stuffed fish, all of which should be standard operating equipment in a hostel. |
