Best Time To Travel?
Best Time To Travel? What is the best time to travel to Uruguay? What time of year? We enjoy warm weather, but not to overbearingly hot and is there a certain time when it can get too touristy?
The colder it is in the usa the warmer it is here. Punta del Este the "hot tourist" spot will be very busy Jan, Feb, less so in Dec and Mar and more or less a ghost town the rest of the year.Outside of Punta del Este I don't think you need to worry about any part being too touristy, anytime. June, July it will almost hit freeze (warmer if you are further north than Montevideo).
Thanks! Sounds like December may be a good time to travel. That is our favorite time to travel anyways so it is good to know. Just want to make sure what to pack. I always try to pack light, but I never know what type of weather to expect.
I was thinking of visiting around November and my friend told me that was one of the slow months. I think I will take you guys advice and plan a trip for the end or beginning of the year.
In December you won't be needing anything heavy or even a light jacket in the day. If you are out late at night you might want a light wind breaker.Your problem will be departing the rainbow and return. If you want to hang out on the beach mid December or later would be my recommendation. If the beach isn't in your plans 365 days a year are great. Today was the first day of the year I wore a light jacket going out in th early evening and it wasn't really necessary.
Sounds delightful to me. About what does the temperature stay at in the spring and summer months? Is this time of year autumn for you?
To steal Chuck's words-- Today was the first day of Fall in Uruguay (and, of course, it's the first day of Spring in the northern hemisphere.) The weather here felt like summer and there were plenty of people on Pocitos beach. The trees are still green and there are plenty of flowers blooming. The days, however, are noticeably shorter. -- From "A year in Uruguay" blog, posted today.
Great info! I had have to hardest time deciding the best time to book the trip. I definitely don't want to be there when it is very crowded. I wouldn't mind going in the December especially since it snows around here during that time.
I've found some of the best fares are from American Airlines website, but not strictly American.Try this process: Go to aa.com select "Search By: Price & Schedule < Enhanced". Then select Advanced Search. Then select All Carriers. The results will then include other airlines, though you can purchase your tickets from aa. They list the American flights first so you might need to scroll down, or go to secondary results pages to see the lowest fare. On a recent trip to Miami... the fares for MVD-MIA were in the US$1400 ballpark. Using the other carriers option we found a flight for US$743.
So, is the weather in uruguay always nice? Like all year round is the weather warm and sunny? where I live its only warm and sunny and actual nice weather about 4 months out of the year. We also tend to get A LOT of snow for about 5 months of the year.
Windy and sunny year round... not too much rain. Never snow. BUT... the apartments turn on the heating systems May 1 and turn them off Sept or Oct 1 (I forget).... they often need turned on a little sooner and off a little later. It will get down to close to freezing during those months... so you can't say its warm all year around. It is NOT a tropical country.
Lee thanks a lot for the info on the weather year round in Uruguay, now I know exactly when I should go.
Its July in Uruguay right now...which means the dead of winter (a very strange concept for us Northern Hemisphere types!).It is cold, that's for sure, but it could be a whole lot worse! Its usually between 4-15 degrees celcius (I'm not a fahrenheit person so you do the math). There are quite a lot of thunderstorms and the weather is very damp, but bitter coldness is not really an issue.
It is often windy too... 4C = 39F 10C = 50F 15C = 59F The Uruguayans consider it cold at 10C or less. It is rare to go below 0C / 32F and never for long. One of the bus stops on the Rambla was decorated with some fake icicles... you'd never see real ones. If you are thinking about living in Uruguay NOW is a great time to visit...
When you say windy, can you give some idea of the typical wind velocity? According to Wunderground .com, the highest winds forecast in the next week in MVD will be 17 mph. At the end of the day I can live with that.
Hey Ernie, I couldn't tell you exact figure for wind velocity but thats not what I'd go on...figures are just figures. We're not talking hurricane winds but in the Spring months the wind is what keeps it cold. I arrived in Uruguay in October - blue skies, sunshine, but a biting wind that made it feel cold and when walking in shaded areas (like around Pocitos because the streets are narrow and buildings are very tall) the wind, no matter at what velocity, is cold.
Hi, Elaine I was just wondering if you have ever been to Kenya.
No, not yet...but someday! Travelling Africa is definitely one of my goals but for now my sights are set on South America.Have you ever been to Uruguay?
