Air Passes

Has anybody had an experience with South American air passes? I am looking into the Visit South America program being offered by Oneworld carriers. In my case that would be American Airlines. I have tried to compare their prices to buying tickets from individual airlines there but am not having much success.

The prices are by zones which are determined by mileage. Examples would be BsAs to MVD = zone 1, cost - US$119

Santiago to BsAs = zone 2, cost = US$143

Lima to Santiago = zone 4, cost US$203

and the beat goes on.

Since everyone on the board very intelligently suggests visiting before moving, I thought I might as well get in as much of the continent as possible.
