The only available public transport services are the buses and the Buquebus to Bs As as passenger train services are almost entirely gone. The long distance bus services are generally good and not outrageously expensive. The only drawback is that they all run in and out of Montevideo making cross country travel by bus difficult. Here in the campo the long distance buses usually connect with local buses for the traveller's convenience. I've yet to try the local MVD services but I'm told that they are good. Below is a link to the Tres Cruces long distance bus timetables. |

There are no trams, trains or underground metro in Montevideo - it is a small city with a small population so they just don't have the market for such services. However as Patrick said the local buses in Montevideo are really good. The buses are modern and clean, they run regularly and they are reliable (unlike in many other developing countries where you could be left waiting for hours or where the buses break down regularly!)Many people swear by the Montevideo Bus Website (link below). This is not a website by the bus company (in fact there are many bus companies that all use the same bus stops) but this website uses google maps and you can pick your starting point and destination and find out all the routes that join them. Personally I don't like the website but thats because I bought a little blue book called "Guia de Montevideo" and it shows detailed maps of the whole city, an index of street names AND all the bus routes too. Remember that many streets in Montevideo are one-way, so buses take a different route there and back. |
