Variety of Transportation

Transportation, Uruguay

RiverQueen from EARTH, MILKYWAY -

Well I have found this link which doesn't really tell you what the transporation system is like in Uruguay but it does give you some facts and figures about the miles of paved and unpaved highways.

It also talks about waterways, ports and harbours along the coastline.

What surprised me was the number of airports which is estimated at 64 BUT only 15 of them have paved runways.

Maybe someone who lives there could explain why so few runways are paved.

I don't think there are 15 airports that you might fly to in a passenger plane. The main international airport is in Montevideo, the Carrasco airport. There might be some international flights to Punta del Este.

We looked at flying to Salto (500 km from Montevideo), but it looked like the flight would make 1 stop and it would cost US$80 (ish) for each segment (ie: $80+$80=$160 each way). That would be $320 round trip or $640 for two. We rented a car for US$99 for the weekend and the gasoline was anout US$100 for the trip. 5+ hour drive each way.

Domestic flying is not a common method of travel in Uruguay. From my reading, the Military used to operate domestic passenger flights. Aside the security at the Carrasco airport is operated by the Uruguayan Air Force.

According to your figures 23% of the airports in Uruguay have paved runways... In the United States it's only 34%.

Airports:

14, 858 (2006)

Airports - with paved runways:

total: 5, 119

over 3, 047 m: 189

2, 438 to 3, 047 m: 221

1, 524 to 2, 437 m: 1, 426

914 to 1, 523 m: 2, 337

under 914 m: 946 (2006)

Airports - with unpaved runways:

total: 9, 739

over 3, 047 m: 1

2, 438 to 3, 047 m: 6

1, 524 to 2, 437 m: 157

914 to 1, 523 m: 1, 728

under 914 m: 7, 847 (2006)

Comment #2 ribbon from around town -

It seems that more people drive to their destinations than actually fly. I would guess that the US has way more paved runways than that. As many airports as there are they only ones that I would even consider that might not be paved would be private.

Yes, it seems that the U.S. would have more paved runways. People spend a lot of money flying in the U.S. so they have the funds to provide better conditions. I'm not sure about the facts but you guys raised some interesting information.

My facts came from the CIA... as I believe the other posters facts about Uruguay did. Maybe someone wants to call the FAA in the USA and verify the numbers?

Comment #5 Sweet Angel from cloud nine -

I found a list that is very helpful. I didn't find FAA figures at first glance, so I'll look a little harder.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 4214
