| Traveling by Ferry Hello everyone and Happy New Year!I have read that there is a Hydrafoil (sp?) that regularly sails between BA and Colonia and BA and MVD, but I haven't been able to find info on whether they also sail between MVD and Colonia and other ports in Uruguay. Is travel by ferry/boat a practical means of transporation while in Uruguay? I was thinking it may be a cool way to see the coastline and also get around :) Any information would be very much appreciated. Thank you! Sharol |

There are two rapid ferry companies operating the Buenos Aires - Colonia route with express bus services to Montevideo and the bigger one also operates a service Bs As - Montevideo direct by rapid ferry.I've put a link to the Buquebus Argentina site below (the prices are in Argentine pesos) and a Seacat link in the following message. |

Hello Sharol."Is travel by ferry/boat a practical means of transporation while in Uruguay? I was thinking it may be a cool way to see the coastline and also get around :)" The answer is no. The only lines available are the ones that cross the Rio de la Plata between Buenos Aires and MVD or Buenos Aires and Colonia. There is a smaller boat crossing from Tigre in northern Buenos Aires to Carmelo. But there's no boat/ferry line used as transportation means between Uruguayan cities. They could never compete with land transportation. You generally find those types of services where there are a lot of islands to visit, or the coast shape make land conections much longer than the direct line over the water. By the way, the latter is the reason why we do have those ferry lines to Buenos Aires. |

Thanks Alberto & Patrick. I had hoped that since there was a ferry from BA to Colonia and BA to Montevideo that there might be one between MVD and Colonia. Oh well, another one of my romantic notions nixed :) Sharol |

The Bs As to MVD ferry sails well off shore because of the shallowness of the Rio Plata so you'd see a great deal more from the bus.As scenic cruises go, the small ferry from Tigre to Carmelo sails through the Rio Pirana delta and often offers some marvellous views of the bird life. |
| "Romanticism and Pirañas."
Sharol, Don't loose your romanticism. You may find some in Uruguay even travelling by land. Be prepared for some of the best sunsets on Earth. Patrick, Now, you've been between us long enough to know that the name of that river is Paraná, wich means "big waters" in Garani. Pirañas have nothing to do with it. So you better prepare your next Geog homework or we'll send a note to your parents. :-) |
| "Info in English"
Is it possible to get ferry information in English? I would like to purchase tickets online and print them out so we won't run into one way ticket problems at the airport. |

I never could spell. I'll go and water my little trees now as a penance :-) |
| "Pirañas in Uruguay"
Maybe you can get a virtual rumor about Pirañas in Uruguay going around like the facebook is closing in March one!Now back to our regularly scheduled program of scenic Uruguay: The bus ride from Montevideo to Colonia is quite nice if you like farm scenes. There are some sailing clubs if you want to go up and down the coast by boat. Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |

Both the ferry company web sites with links above are multilingual. You'll find that Seacat has a language choice on the top left hand side and Buquebus has a drop down box near the top on the right. |
