We are travelling to Colonia by ferry, spending one night in Colonia, then wanting to travel to Montevideo to spend one night there as well, before catching the ferry back to Buenos Aires. What options are available to travel from Colonia to Montevideo? What would be the best or preferred option? Are there any tours which include travel to Montevideo that anyone knows about? We haven't been very successful in finding this information on the internet, and hope someone might be able to help us with this. Any information anyone can tell us would be very much appreciated!

"Colonia to MVD"
You have a choice of buses from Colonia city to Tres Cruces terminal in MVD.
Buquebus (the ferry company) operates express buses direct from the Colonia ferry terminal to MVD and other bus companies (COT, Turil and occasionally Chadre) offer bus services from Colonia city to MVD departing approximately every 90 and 30 minutes.
The buses are reasonably comfortable, reasonably priced and have helpful conductors to supervise your luggage.
I have posted a link to the Tres Cruces bus timetables below. Select Colonia as your departure point and the timetable will come up.

Thanks very much Patrick. Appreciate the information and the link. Do you know if the COT and Turil and Chadre buses are express, or do they stop along the way to pickup extra passengers? Also - do you have an idea of the cost of these buses to MVD?

"Colonia to MVD"
Hello again Patrick. Is it better to pre-book bus tickets from Colonia to MVD, or is it fine to book once we arrive in Colonia? We already have accommodation booked in MVD, so we want to make sure we can get there ok!

"COT, Turil and Chadre"
Except for Buquebus buses, they all do a few stops along the way but there are no big cities or towns between Colonia del Sacramento and MVD so the halts are brief. The buses also act as light cargo carriers so they pick up and drop off parcels.
The bus fare is about 180$ (9 U$S approx) and the 177km journey takes about 2 hours 40 minutes inc stops. When you arrive at Tres Cruces, you can walk through the terminal and you will find a taxi rank just outside the doors on your right. MVD taxis have meters and charts to guard against rip-offs and are also reasonably priced.
At this time of year you probably won't need to pre-book the bus but you can if you want... either online or when you pass one of the agencies while you are wandering about in Colonia del Sacramento which is a small city ideal for walking. Unlike Eurpoean buses, your ticket will specify your particular seats so its civilized and there isn't a scrum. For exploring Colonia del Sacramento you can even hire yourself an electric buggy if you want to drive out along the Real de San Carlos to view the beaches and the old bull ring.
