| Renting a car We are coming to Uruguay from Scotland in July for a fortnight to look for a plot of land to buy out of town - which town we don't know yet, but we want to do a bit of subsistance farming, keeping chickens, donkeys, etc, but while we are out we would need to rent a car for the period. Apart from really expensive rentals at the airport, are there any other places that we could rent an old car from just to get us about without breaking the bank. We are coming out on a really tight budget so every penny counts. |

I rarely rent cars in the ROU these days as I live here and have my own. Hire vehicles here pay rather more road fund taxes than privately owned vehicles and many departmentos insist that they have special number plates. When I first arrived I used to do a lot of hiring and found that the cheapest way was to use on-line car hire comparison sites to access car hire sites to hire a car from Carrasco airport... usually via Cartrawler from Europcar via a Dublin company called Argus :-) Broadly speaking this process only cost about two thirds as much as booking directly with Europcar on line and one third as much as hiring a car in person from them at the airport. We have a local supplier of hire vehicles where I live in the campo but he charges as much as the walk-in rates at the airport. I'm away to the UK and Spain next month. The UK car I'll be renting comes through an American price comparison site and a Spanish booking agency but the car I'll be renting in Spain came through a UK comparison site and my old pals Argus in Dublin. Car hire rates seem to defy logic both here and elsewhere in this world :-) |
| "Car Rentals etc."
I rented at the airport through Dollar and they were great. Had a problem with the car and they sent out a new one for exchange to me. Only thing to watch for or at least plan in advance is insurance. Make sure your insurance at home covers you in UY. Or, if you get the chance, buy full - all in insurance - when you rent on-line from someone like carrentals.com or some other agregator (like we did). Waiting till your there in Montevideo is REALLY expensive. On a side note, drivers in Uruguay are VERY courteous, drive pretty slowly compared to the rest of the world, and other than the occasional drifting from lane to lane (which happens a lot) they drive really safely. Even the actual speed limits are very slow in most areas, especially the highway to Punta del Este (which can drive you nuts). But...it's definitely safer and makes it even more unlikely for you to get in an accident where insurance becomes involved. One last thing. A cabbie told me this and I'm not 100% sure if it's true but I had the impression it's true. If the speed limit says 60km. You'll pull a ticket at 62. There's no 65 or 68 leeway. 60 is 60 etc. |

Thank you so much for your helpful advice. We will def go onto comparison websites and check them out. We are really looking forward to our trip although it won't be a holiday as much as a property search. |

"We are really looking forward to our trip although it won't be a holiday as much as a property search."I did the same back in 2005/6 and haven't regretted it. After long years of being a over-regulated small farmer in the UK, I still get a daily thrill from my new life as a "free range" farmer down here... we haven't suffered a single visit from officials or inspectors since we first bought the place. Its like being a battery hen released from the cage :-) I hope that you will love it as much as I do. |

Thanks Patrick. I suspect we will. :) |
