Off roading

Thank author of this post/commentRiding off road vehicles is a popular sport and pastime. My husband likes to ride motocross motorcycles. Is it a popular activity in Uruguay?

Montevideo, Uruguay
Thank author of this post/commentAhhh.. a subject dear to my heart... my last bike in Canada was a 500 Aprillia.. That's pretty much out of the question here. Siggghhhh..

No. You will see a lot of motos here.. but they're used for personal transportation and work (preferred method of delivering food in Montevideo). Young Uruguayans have no possibility of buying or even driving a car.... too expensive. So they buy Chinese motos for USD500 to USD900. It's also the leading cause of death for young Uruguayan males. In the past year, I have unfortunately seen 2 of them.

But if you come and you get your hands on one, there's some really good off road riding. My personal favourite is the backside of Cerro San Antonio... Several years a good friend of mine decided to take a path down the front side.. I thought for sure he was going to break every bone in his body, but he made it to the bottom unscathed. I'm a wuss.. I rode the backside and met up with at the beach...

Rural east Colonia departmento
Thank author of this post/commentDecent bikes cost a fortune down here but if you are into 4 wheel autocross, there is keen competition in at least 3 classes of race cars at Departmental and National level.

My local club http://www.esparta.org/ (click on Automovilismo) sponsors 2 classes of dirt track racing... Formula 2000 Tourismo (2 seater stripped down saloon cars) and Formula Volkswagen 1800 (single seater Mad-Max machines.) We hold monthly races from April to November across Colonia and Flores Departmentos. We sometimes share our meetings with the CUPAs (2 seater Mad-Maxes with unlimited engine capacities.)

If you are a dedicated petrohead, enjoy an adrenalin high and fancy your chances against the local opposition, its a great sport which costs you lots of time but not too much money.

Patrick.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 252862962
