| Motorcycles Are motorcycles a popular mode of transportation? Are they safe to ride? Do you have helmet laws? |
| Very popular as I wrote earlier. My wife says they're dangerous as hell. Personally, I've never seen any driver intentionally take out a bike rider... But a lot of them are driven poorly and believe it or not, recklessly at night without lights. I've had a couple almost t-bone me because of that. I believe there is a helmet law. But it's clearly either unenforced, or the way it's written, you an get around it. For instance, you see many riders with the helmet a) strap not secured. b) sitting on top of the head.. not on the head and my favourite c) on the arm. Both fatalities I saw were head injuries. The last one had the helmet on his arm. His arm looked OK. His head did not. Pesonally, I believe if you drive a moto carefully and defensively, it's no more dangerous than at home. But my wife says no... and she's the boss. |
| Do they have subways and taxis in Uruguay? |
| Subways no. Lots of buses and taxis. |
| I cannot believe that motorcyclists in this country ride to recklessly. This is a terrible thing, though the country be as beautiful as it is. Having such dangers around would only cause hindrance to tourists. |

Driving home today I met a lady riding a 110cc Yumbo step-thru with 3 children with her on the bike. She was so busy reading a text message on her mobile phone that she nearly hit me head on :-) |

I feel safer driving a motorcycle in UY than I do in the US, and I think it's because the drivers in UY are more accustomed to sharing the road with bikes and therefore more aware. Someone tries to run me over daily in the US, usually from changing lanes without looking. Most of the bike wreckage I have seen in UY has been from rider irresponsibility. I've seen them ride right out in front of oncoming cars, take corners too fast, and do dumb things like not wear a helmet or not pulling over to use the phone. |

I was surprised to see very few children wearing crash helmets. A friend explained to me that childrens' helmets are generally unavailable because it is illegal for children under 12 to ride on motorcycles... a strange state of affairs as many families have no other means of transportation. |
