| Montevideo bus routes For those that like to use public transportation rather than driving everywhere, there is a website where you can find any bus route in Montevideo, simply by clicking on a map of the city. Click where you want to start the trip and where you want to go. Then click on "Buscar recorridos". |
| "Bus routes in Montevideo"
Hi Ives, I've heard many people talk about this website, I think it has been a big help for new arrivals and tourists looking for buses as there are no schedules or maps on the bus stops like in most other countries. I don't use the website because in my first week here I discovered a great little pocket sized book called "Guia de Montevideo" or "Eureka". It has detailed maps of the whole city, it explains all the bus routes street by street, and it tells you the route there and the return route (which as often different because most of the streets downtown are one way). It also has an alphabetical index of every street in the city. It has been my saviour many a time! I can't remember how much it cost, probably around 100 pesos, its usually available in Mosca book store and other big book shops. I think some of the bigger street kiosks sell it too. |
| "Montevideo Guide"
Elaine Can you get one in English? Bob |
| "Tourist Resources"
I think you'll find there are very few tourists resources (ie: guide books, etc) about Uruguay and even fewer in English.Years ago, I got some great guide books and maps from the Ministry of Tourism. They had a little office outside the Intendendia. Of course it was all in Spanish. Guide books are a good way to start learning Spanish... they are fairly easy and stuff like hotels and prices are easily understood regardless of your Spanish abilities. |
| "Getting around Montevideo"
Hey Bob, The guide doesn't really contain any language. The first 3/4 of it is very detailed maps of Montevideo broken down in to grid sections with every street (even the tiniest ones) named. Also on these street maps they have the bus numbers written on all the streets they go on. After that there are a few pages on an index with all the street names listed alphabetically, and finally there are all the bus routes listed by number which outlines every street that bus route runs on. Pretty much the only words in the whole book are street names, and they can't be translated (well, technically they can but if you ask someone where "Peach Street" is rather than Durazno I'm sure you won't get very far!). This little book has been a lifesaver to me! No matter where I end up in the city I can figure out where I am, what buses pass by and where they can bring me. The street name index has been great for locating places when only given an address. For such a tiny price and at such a tiny pocket size it really was a gem to find and I would highly recommend it to all newcomers. |
| "Transport from Colonia to Montevideo"
We are travelling to Colonia by ferry, spending one night in Colonia, then wanting to travel to Montevideo to spend one night there as well, before catching the ferry back to Buenos Aires. What options are available to travel from Colonia to Montevideo? What would be the best or preferred option? Are there any tours which include travel to Montevideo that anyone knows about? We haven't been very successful in finding this information on the internet, and hope someone might be able to help us with this. Any information anyone can tell us would be very much appreciated! |
