I am from North America and wish to BUY a vehicle in Uruguay, then drive it to Argentina regularly. I will be living as a non-resident for half of each year in each country. Does anyone know about this or what agency would be best to contact?

In Argentina a non-Argentine is not allowed to transport a vehicle they purchased in Argentina over the border (any border, from what I´ve read). Does Uruguay have the same law?

Yes, I would expect to have to leave bond with customs upon exit, to be recovered upon re-entry to Uruguay.

I can´t afford to buy two cars, one for each country! Thanks.

Hi there Greis..

I am just wondering, are you planning to stay in Uruguay for a long period of time say 10-20 years or you will just have a vacaton there? If you are planning to only stay in that place for 3-6 months for a vacation then just let your car be and consider car rentals. Because there would be lots of fees and papers to be accomplished before you can be able to ship your car with you.

Two years ago before I applied for residency I drove my aged Nissan to Argentina for a few days with no border problems at all. I had to take my extra-large portfolio of car papers inc the certificate from the Ministry of Culture that no famous Uruguayan had been a previous owner of the car as well as a green card but my escribana gave me good advice and all went smoothly.

Two points... cars are expensive in Uruguay and Uruguayan plates in Argentina act as traffic fine magnets :-)

A nephew of mine shipped his camper van from Hamburg to Bs As and spent 9 months trucking around South America before shipping it back to Germany from Brazil.

Apart from the high shipping costs and lots of paperwork he reckoned the process wasn't too difficult. Most summers I see one or two convoys of German motorhomes passing by on Ruta 1 so it can't be too difficult to do.

Patrick.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 5898
