Buying a car in order to drive across South America is a great idea and a fun adventure, I've known quite a few people who've done it, but DO NOT buy a car in Uruguay!Due to a controlled market the high import prices and high value added tax sends the price of decent vehicles through the roof. Cars sell here for MUCH more than they are worth! I don't where it is cheapest to buy a car, but a friend of mine bought a van in Chile in order to do this is maybe ask around. If you are buying any time soon (Feb/March 2010) a friend here in Uruguay has a cute VW van on sale for a decent price on "Uruguay Big Sale" (google it). Other wise I would suggest getting in touch with experience people who have done this, most of them have blogs documenting their journey. Try starting your search here (at the link below) and making as many contacts as possible - people who have done it are the best people to ask. |

thanks...i had heard chili is good because of ability to cross borders as foreginer with car....argentina not goof however i do not know is uraguay registration allows for easy border crossing |

Elaine is right. Used cars here in the ROU are VERY expensive.3 years ago I bought a 9 yr old Nissan Sentra with 155k kms on the clock for 6.7k U$S and it took 9 weeks to finalize the paperwork. Two months ago I sold the now 12 yr old car with 218k kms on the clock for a breath-taking 8k U$S :-) The other drawback to buying a used car here is the need for a lawyer and the time it can take to get the paperwork finalised. I couldn't take my Nissan out of the country until I finally got a certificate from the Ministry of Culture assuring the world that the car had never been owned by a Uruguayan cultural icon :-) I don't know about regulations in other SA countries but it would be hard to imagine anywhere where used cars are more expensive and where the paperwork is more complex. |

thanks for your reponses....seems ill-advised to buy a car in uraguaychili is known to be fairly easy , but i thought i'd compare uraguay. i will buy in chili thanks ...your help was much appreciated |
