cell phones
| cell phones Are SIM cards available so that I can use my un-blocked phone? I have a GSM Nokia 3500 that is also available in ROU and I was hoping that I could buy a pre-paid card to use it temporarily while there. Possible? Thank you. |

Yes... sime cards are available from Claro and Movistar. I think they are about40 pesos (US$2). Sometimes you can get them at the kiosks at the mall. Sometimes you have to go to one of the main offices. To charge them you are best to go to one of the bill payment centers (Abitab, Redpagos) and give them your phone number and tell them how much you want prepaid. You can also do it at the checkout at Tienda Inglesa at Montevideo Shopping and probably the other major grocery stores. You can buy the cards but it is silly to go to all that effort. |

Hi Mark, Yes if your phone is unlocked and is triband (or whatever is necessary to work on the frequency here) then you should have no problem. I've had guests come from South Africa, Europe and the US and all of them put a Uruguayan sim card in their phone and it worked fine so you shouldn't have any problem. Even if it doesn't work you can buy a really cheap basic phone for around US$40 here with sim card and phone credit included. You should know that here in Uruguay you don't buy "minutes" like you do in the US. You buy 50/100/150 pesos worth of credit and then you are charged for every text message and phone call you make - you are NOT charged to receive calls or messages. |

Lee wrote that you can get SIM cards from Claro and Movistar, but you can also get them from ANCEL too.I've also read elsewhere that the various GSM providers in Uruguay operate on different frequencies, so if you don't have a quad-band phone, check the carrier's operating frequencies carefully before you buy! |

Thanks for the info. Mine is a tri-band and I think it'll work, so all I need is a SIM card with a UR cell # and buy some phone credit (time). What cell company has the best coverage? I'll mostly need just the south and east coast of UR. |
| "Cell Phone Companies in Uruguay"
The only company I have ever heard of having coverage problems is Claro. Ancel is the cell phone branch of the state owned telecommunications company Antel and it seems to be the most widely used. Movistar is also very popular, I have been with Movistar for a year and a half now and never have any problems with their coverage, even in Rocha. I can also send international text messages (to Ireland, Italy, Australia etc) for only 1 peso! |

Good to know. Claro still has problems in my part (Boquete) of Panama. Thanks Elaine |

All 3 have problems with G3 internet service and coverage. On that note... Movistar and Claro have prepaid g3 services... Movistar you pay by the MB, Claro you pay by the day... so depending on your needs and uses one or the other could be much better (or worse in price).Ancel probably has the best coverage for cel service... but they are the most bureaucratic. Last time I inquiries they required you have home service for 2 years before you could get a cell phone them. I don't know if they offer prepaid service now. You can probably get a chip from Claro or Movistar without giving your name even. |

Handy information if you want to know about mobile internet usage, but this info has little/nothing to do with the original question here which is about simple cell phone sim cards and the coverage they offer.Mobile internet is still under development in many countries (in Ireland these services are still pretty unreliable too). It is available here, the prices and quality of coverage varies between companies, but if you want to ask about that I suggest starting a new thread so that this one can stay on topic about cell phone usage. |
