You can get 10 mb adsl connections. The only issue might be if a site objects to using a foreign IP address. You can resolve that with a VPN service.Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |

OK, thanks for the info. I'm assuming that if one has the correct service in Uruguay and wants to trade utilizing a platform subscription based in the U.S. there should be no conflict? My only concern is the connectivity integrity and if there is any better election to make regarding the systems set up. The 3 hour advantage from the eastern U.S. seaboard has some advantages. |

There are several options for service:Antel ADSL Antel G3 Dedicado Movistar G3 Claro G3 I am quite sure that Antel ADSL and Dedicado use different routes out of Uruguay (though once you get to miami they may go through the same carriers). I think Movistar and Claro also have their own gateways out of Uruguay, but am not completely sure. So you can get two connections and if one drops chances are the other breaks. I find problems are rare, but have Antel Adsl and Dedicado and at the push of a button switch between them. Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |

Your replies are much appreciated. I thank you kindly. What are the cost involved in signing up for these services? I imagine they are tiered as in the states: the better the speed the more the rates accelerate. Is there a waiting period for installation? Is there a major cable service provider or are there several, perhaps sharing the same cable structure? Cell phone service can sometimes be better than what we receive here in the states, depending on one's location. Asia has far superior cell service than us. What's the status down there? On another note, how is the humidity there? Like Florida? Regards, D. H. De Vore |
| "No cable internet"
There is no cable tv based internet. There are several resellers of the Antel ADSL, but the ultimate service and prices are Antel's. Yes, they have far too many speeds and plans.Below I linked to their list of plans (16+ plans). "Asdl movile" (Adsl mobile) is not adsl at all, but the G3 based internet. I would not use that for anything mission critical or believe what any carrier said about its government. It drops back to GSM (worse than dial up) if the G3 signal is unavailable or weak. You have to sign a 4 or 12 month contract. If you sign a 4 month contract and then extended it 4 more months, you will end up paying for installation a second time, even though they don't do anything. They also offer a "seasonal" adsl service which is just for the summer. The best deal is probably the ADSL 80 giga plan at $1290 (about US$65/month). That gives you 10 megabit per second download, 512 K upload and a traffic limit of 80 gigabytes per month. Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |

Thanks again for the information. As you probably have discerned, I am interested in trading the financial markets via the net. If the ISP is not reliable enough to place trades in an instant, with no delays, then there is an issue here. When one purchases stock to hold for a given number of days, weeks or months and even years, this is not too much of an issue. If, on the other hand, one wants to Day Trade, there are many transactions per hour or even as little as minutes. This, of course, is critical; they have to be made fast.....buying and selling with speed and good execution. Are you originally from the U.S.? |
| "Trading on-line"
Do you do your day trading through a brokerage firm or are you a broker with a brokerage firm? (it's a rhetorical question that you needn't answer) In either case, you've got to make your trades through an intermediary such as your broker or your employer if you're a broker yourself. I was in Montevideo as recently as November 2010. I have several retail on-line brokerage accounts with Canadian banks and was able to access my accounts and trade on-line while in Uruguay. My server while in Mvd was Claro, but I doubt if it would make any difference which Uruguayan server you use so long as your brokerage site accepts you logging in. |
| "Is Uruguay Approved By Your Trading Providers?"
I recently signed up for Social Security Retirement benefits. I was not able to do it online from Uruguay, because IP addresses originating from Uruguay are not acceptable to the security algorithms in the SS servers. You need to make sure that Uruguay IP addresses are acceptable to whichever trading providers you use. (The alternative is to have a VPN portal into the USA.)The Internet access in Uruguay is just about as good as in the USA. Some folks have ADSL as their base service and a backdoor access to the Internet with a pay-as-you-go USB 3G modem, which is rarely (if ever) used. Weather here is just like Houston, with hot humid Summers and cool Winters (which rarely gets down to freezing). |
| "Internet"
I am not a day trader but I do invest in stocks and I monitor the market every day. Are the various internet services available to part time hotel residents or must one have his own apartment and have the service installed? Are there internet cafes in MVBD? |
| "Internet Cafes?"
Wow, you are in luck. Internet access shops are everywhere. They don't cost much to use and are found all over the city. You will be even luckier if you have a laptop/netbook. Montevideo has free WIFI everywhere. Every restaurant and coffee shop has free WIFI. Many of the buses even have free WIFI. |
| "Laptop"
I do in fact have a laptop. Buses? Never heard of that before. Sounds great. |
| "Land of 3G"
Uruguay has more cell phones than population. The 3G network here is quite strong and the 3G smart phones will hook up with available WIFI for Internet access to save you bandwidth. Uruguay was the first country in the world to commit to the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) program. They have already given the computers to all elementary school children and this year they start handing out a beefed-up version for the high school children. These little computers have the ability to network with all the other OLPC computers in range (which are turned on) and if any computer in this net has access to the Internet, they all have access. So, there is a growing consciousness about Internet access and use. I assume that restaurants and buses are coming online as part of this consciousness. In a recent speech, the Uruguayan President talked about nationwide WIFI as one of the government's goals. |

"The 3G network here is quite strong and the 3G smart phones will hook up with available WIFI for Internet access to save you bandwidth."In the cities yes but here in the campo, sadly not. I live 5 kms from the centre of Valdense, 2.5 kms from La Paz and 3.5 kms from Ruta 1. Four years ago I was promised 3G availability "within a month" but it hasn't happened yet. As a result I have to pay 180 U$S/month for a 32kB/s Dedicado radio connection... but we live in hope :-) |

I thank all of you for your input; it's greatly appreciated. |
