Tech Lifestyle in Uruguay

I am just curious about the tech lifestyle of people in Uruguay. Are Uruguayans also "Techie" in nature? Not to sound offensive but I know Uruguay is a great and tranquil country with almost untouched natural resources, just wouldn't imagine people be into computers or gadgets there. There is no doubt about expats, gadgets will always be there partner when it comes to travel, but that of Uruguayans? Hope someone from Uruguay can enlighten me.

Thank author of this post/commentConsidering that every school aged child has a laptop.. even if they are so poor not to have good clothes or enough food, I would say Uruguay is on the leading edge of being techie.

It will be interesting to see how the one laptop per child program affects the future of Uruguay.

Thank author of this post/commentWith this new laptop per child project (and free wifi on plazas and buses) I think Uruguay is well on its way to BECOMING techy, but I don't think its there yet.

Maybe this blog will be of interest to you...this guy lives in Uruguay and seems very techy to me, he might be able to give you the answers you're looking for.

Thank author of this post/commentUruguay as a whole is reasonably tech savvy.

Two things hold it back: Access to inexpensive equipment, as none of it made here (it's taxed like hell) and poor internet bandwidth/speed. One can be fixed with money, the other can't.

Thank author of this post/commentWell.... you can get 4 megabit per second internet which usually works. When I lived in Pennsylvania before you couldn't get any when I left. Now you can get 1.5 mb DSL from Verizon if you are lucky and half that if they feel like it (for the same prices). Or you can get 3mb from comcast which will cause you lots grief.

In the Philippines people were lucky to get a 384K connection that worked. In the month I was there, there wasn't a single day I had a reliable or consistent connection.

Costa Rica isn't even worth mentioning.

So, for consumer based internet services I'd take Uruguay over those 3 anytime.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 373759041
