| Iphone 4 Micro Sim Can anyone tell me if I can get a Micro Sim for IPhone4 from any of the carriers in Uruguay as a pre-paid option? I was hoing to buy the new Iphone before I move over but just want to make sure I can buy a micro sim on it's own when I arrive. |

I brought an unlocked iPhone 4 and attempted to get a microSIM from Ancel. They do not offer one. I got a normal-sized SIM from them, whipped out my Noosy Micro SIM Cutter, and crunched it into microSIM size right in the Ancel office. The representative looked impressed. The resulting microSIM works perfectly in my iPhone 4.I have no idea if you can buy a microSIM cutter in Uruguay. I recommend you bring one with you if you can. I was unable to get data working with my SIM until I hired a local who went back to Ancel with me and spent a lot of time speaking Spanish. In order to get data working with a prepaid SIM, I first had to go back to the airport and declare my phone with customs, then take the declaration paper back to Ancel and get a different SIM with a different prepaid plan (called "BAM" something). I was able to keep my same telephone number and now I'm getting prepaid data too. The right way to do this is to declare your phone as you enter the country. I saw an expat carrying an iPhone 4 that he bought here, I think from Claro. I don't know whether they offer a prepaid option. I decided to go with Ancel because I heard that all the other companies are reselling Ancel's service. Good luck. |
| "Reselling"
All the ADSL service is from Antel, some of it resold by others. All of the cell companies are independent of each other... ie: Ancel, Movistar and Claro are not reselling each others services. I don't think Claro o Movistar bothers you about a customs declaration. Claro prepaid internet is by the date, Movistar is by the byte. Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |
| "best carrier?"
Oh, that's good to know! I just signed up for service with Ancel because of my incorrect assumption. Should I switch carriers quickly while I still can? Which is the best?So far my experience of Ancel is that I sometimes get the slower E network instead of 3G, about 6 calls in the last few days have been indecipherable machine noises (I had to hang up and reconnect), and the Visual Voicemail feature on the iPhone isn't supported (much less FaceTime). On the plus side, MMS works and tethering works (though apparently not during voice calls). |
| "Claro is your answer"
I just got a prepaid microSIM from Claro, no cutter necessary. |

What is the going price for an unlocked iPhone 4s in Montevideo now? |
