Increased Technology Boosts Production

Thank author of this post/commentUruguay has increased the use of technology and evidence of this is the soybean crop. The first crops harvested showed increases in yield compared to last year despite the reduction of rain. This was due to new technologies being used.

This has results in more interest from overseas investors.

Each year the increasing use of technology has assisted farmers in increasing production and the whole agribusiness chain is becoming more and more efficient which of course is great for the country's economy.

Thank author of this post/commentThat's a great thing. There is so much technology in the world today I'm surprised they haven't found a way to increase production of almost everything.

But in the meantime having a larger soybean crop will certainly help the economy for the agricultural area of business and that's good news for Uruguay.

Thank author of this post/commentIt is good to see developments that will help a country to thrive. With the new technologies they should definitely see some economic growth.

Thank author of this post/commentI think tofu is generally hard to find here... you might try Casa Singer in Centro. Soybeans are used for much more than Tofu.

Thank author of this post/commentI'm more uncertain about the benefits of growing soya in Uruguay because of the high inputs of fertilizer, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides which the crop requires. I was approached by a Chinese/Uruguayo team of agronomists last year who wanted me to sign up for a 5 year contract but after doing some reading and talking to neighbours, I decided not to do so.

As it turns out I made the right choice from an economic pov as soya prices have collapsed locally this year.

Uruguay has a long tradition of low input farming so we don't suffer from the soil exhaustion you find in Europe. When the weather is kind two crops can be grown per annum and by using sensible rotation systems, the use of fertilizers, fungicides, pesticides and herbicides can be kept to a minimum. I live on my land and I use the water from under it so it seems sense to me to avoid turning the place into a toxic dump.

Patrick.

Thank author of this post/commentI try to eat organically. I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. Are they easy to find there?

I plan on visiting in July 2009. I'd like to get a feel on where would be a good place to live.

Thank author of this post/commentThere are lots of fruits and vegetables... the organic selection seems fairly small though. Here's a link to a blog post I wrote about the price of fruit here a while back...
