| How to call someone in Uruguay The title here might seem a little odd, the answer is obvious, pick up the phone and dial! However, starting August 29, just over a week from today, you may have a little trouble!Montevideo, uses 7 digit phone numbers, much like we are used to in the USA. Pick up the phone and dial 204-5199 and get who ever that might be. Starting Aug 29th, that won't work any more. From within Montevideo you'll need to dial 2-204-5199. 2 being the city code for Montevideo. If you are calling from OUTSIDE Uruguay to a number in Montevideo, nothing has changed. The number will still be +598-2-204-5199. For numbers in the interior (ie: not Montevideo) it seems to be a bit more complicated. Basically, you have to dial a 4 before the number. For example, in Colonia, a number used to be: 52-24999 (52=Colonia). Now you would dial 4-52-24999. And from OUTSIDE Uruguay: +598-4-52-24999. In some places the numbers are more short, and when dialing between place you usually started with a 0. Basically they eliminated the 0 and introduced the digit 4, except for Maldonado which already uses 42. The goal is to make all numbers and dialing sequences 8 digits. No actual phone numbers have been changed, nor the various 3 digital codes such as 911, 104, etc. Number starting with 84 have been changed to start with 284. 084 to 0114, 085 to 0115, and 059 to 0116. No indication has been given about any changes with cellular #'s, ie: whether the 0 is dropped or not to make them 8 digit numbers. 0800 and 0900 numbers are not changed as they are already 8 digits as is. Enjoy the confusion. |
