Cable

Thank author of this post/commentI was just reading about internet lines and how long it takes to get them installed. One you have to have a telephone line first and the other you don't.

That made me think about Cable. Is there such a thing as cable television in Uruguay and if there is how long does it take to get it installed? Can you order it before you take possession of your house or apartment so that the day you move in it gets installed?

Also what programs do you receive on cable television in Uruguay? Do you get all the regular American channels or is it mostly local television?

Thank author of this post/commentMy experience it is takes under a week to get cable installed and we have our choice of 2 or 3 cable companies. To move the service they wanted 72 hours notice, but moved it the next day (well, they never disconnected it in the old place)...

We have Montecable, see link below for the channels, etc. I don't like it because some channels are on digital and some on analog. We really don't use the digital box at all. Once our contract is up, we're switching to DirecTV.

What is not offered (yet) in the cable tv realm is cable internet. That is apparently more of a regulatory issue than anything else.

Wow!! I really did not know that it would actually take such a very long time for something like this, in this very country. It is a thing that actually only takes a couple of minutes in my country, and prior to these couple minutes, one simply has to make an appointment with them, in order for them to be able to get stuff started.

Thank author of this post/comment"Nuevo Siglo"

I use Nuevo Siglo TV Cable. They require a 6 month contract minimum, but they allow you to transfer the service (once, free of charge) to someone else if you're not going to use it for the entire 6 month period. So since I am in Uruguay only 2 months a year, I transfer the remaning 4 months of service to my cleaning lady, who cannot afford cable TV. I pay for the entire 6 months in advance. I've never had a problem having it installed. My cleaning lady calls them on the phone and makes an appointment for them to come on a specific day at a specific time and that's that. It's done in minutes.

Thank author of this post/comment"P.V.R."

I'm not sure of what a PVR is, but I do have a Nuevo Siglo de-coder with HDD where I can record cable programs. Officially, the de-coder don't have the functionality to send the recorded videos to a computer, so you can donwload to a DVD. However, I've heard "rumors" that that is possible.

Thank author of this post/comment"Personal Video Recorder"

He probably means Personal Video Recorder by PVR.

The post was made from the Philippines according to the IP. It is probably a message that has nothing to do with anything. I deleted 3 or 4 other messages from Asia that were posted last night and this morning that had nothing to do with anything (ie: nothing to do with Uruguay or Expats).

I guess that is my reward for added the link in the menu for "Forum Tips, " a length but complete write up on posting here!

Back to the PVR... do you watch more or less TV with it? Once I upgraded to DirecTV Plus (direcTV with integrated PVR) I watch much less TV.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 2226280909
