Are we still really responding to Eve's posts?

Thank author of this post/commentJust out of curiosity, is there any reason why Total Uruguay is still permitting posts started from the 63.176.159.xxx netblock (such as this one was)? All of these serial posts started by Nammi (AKA Eve) are nonsensical and they contribute little to the community. I'd hate to have people on this forum spend their time answering specific questions when the questioner obviously doesn't care about the answer.

It's not just TotalUruguay: these fake and poorly-worded posts from the same person are scattered all over the related TotalWhatever dot com sites too (for example, look at TotalPeru).

Thank author of this post/comment"Moved Post"

I moved this reply from a discussion about technology to a new post... so that discussion (which may have started with a stupid question) which seemed to be a bit interesting could stay on topic... and this could be discussed separately.

I don't think its suitable to be telling someone to "get lost". At least UruDad have his reasons for finding certain posts "inappropriate". He simply didn't tell someone to "get lost".

The issue certainly deserves an intelligent discussion.

Jorge & Florence: please google "forum troll" if you don't understand what I am talking about.

Is she planning to move to Colombia, Venezuela (to "live with her girlfriend"), Paraguay ("to teach" or "to retire", depending on which message you read) and Ecuador simultaneously, as she has claimed in various posts? If they were honest questions, fine, but I don't see how it is possible that she could be doing all of those things at the same time, while also somehow changing her name with every post (what's up with that?).

Hitting the delete button is easy for me, but I'd hate to have other forum members waste their time answering vaguely-worded questions that do not need to be answered.

Here are some examples of all of the threads that "Eve" has started--not ones that she has responded to, but rather, "questions" that she has initiated on her own on other boards without any context.

I usually see travel websites and forum threads promoting the beauty of their country to attract potential visitors. This time I would want to know about the beauty of Peru. What are the main tourist attractions of the country? What is their national cuisine and the dishes that defines this nation? Hope someone (an expat) can share a personal or expat blog here to describe and introduce to us life and the beauty of Peru.

It is very important for a person to know what sort of prices they are dealing with when it comes to the concern of food and things of the sort.

Cherry (63.176.159.65) - 02/08/10 23:02

Hi there folks, how is life? There are indeed lots of good things to discover and learn when you are in some other country. Think of all the fun and the good things you can experience while roaming. Next year we will be in Chile and I am so excited about it. I just wonder how is the transportation in the country at present is. I hate traffic and so I just wish that traffic is not the case in this country.

A good day to all of the forum buffs here.

We had lots of fun celebrating Christmas last year. And you know what guys, the Christmas is the much awaited time of the year in our family. During this time is the time that we are getting together and love to know how Christmas is celebrated in Colombia, where we are to move next year. Hope to hear from all of you guys.

eve (63.176.159.49) - 01/13/10 23:05

One should be sure to check out the Colombian real estate scene prior to moving to the country. This would be to ensure a smooth process, and to some degree, to ensure safety when traveling, as well.

eve (63.176.159.118) - 01/09/10 14:22

When in Colombia, it is surely a lovely thing for one to be able to have easy access to some of the lovely pieces of land that this magnificent location has to offer.

Hi there guys. I am about to visit and probably spend a much longer time in the country of Ecuador. Kindly post here some good information regarding the said country because some said that it is not that safe to live in this part of the world. Is this true? I will be waiting for all of your posts guys. Thanks a lot and have a nice day. Take care!

smithy (63.176.159.17) - 02/01/10 23:11

It makes sense to have broadband internet, does it not? I would say so, but would one rather have something else? If so, what would that be?

eve (63.176.159.187) - 01/26/10 21:43

We can have a lot of fun simply by thinking of new and unique things to do, in general, but it is dire for us to learn of the fun things that we can take part in when visiting Ecuador.

Rafael (63.176.159.185) - 01/29/10 21:44

Hi there guys, I am thinking of teaching in the country of Paraguay. I am very much interested on teaching in this country and would like to know more about the qualifications. Is it easy for expats to have a teaching job in Paraguay? What are the credentials that are likely to be asked? Hope to hear from all of you guys and kindly post all of the important details here.

Adeline (63.176.159.104) - 01/28/10 20:41

Hi to all. I am thinking of retiring in Paraguay. There are indeed lots of good places I have in mind but I think I would be considering Paraguay above all. So how is the prices in this beautiful country compared to the other countries? I would want to know the prices of some of the basic commodities in this country so kindly do post some here. Thanks a lot.

Naoemi (63.176.159.43) - 02/08/10 23:31

Hi there guys, I have heard that one of the most popular sports in Venezuela is Badminton. I am happy to hear that because I myself also love badminton and since I am moving in Venenzuela, I bet there I will be able to meet lots of people who shares interests with me there. I just wonder how much people in this country love Badminton. Thanks a lot and have a nice day.

Thank author of this post/comment"Useful conversations"

Not everyone's English is fluent so sometimes it is hard to know who's questions are genuine and who is wasting people's time. I agree that sometimes the messages from Eve don't add much to the forum, but people's answers to some of her questions have started off good conversations and provided information that many people are actually looking for and so they have been left.

Spam is deleted wherever possible and as quickly as possible from the forum and I don't think that Eve's posts have really hindered anyone's use of the board. Honestly I don't know why it should bother anyone enough to start an argument over it

Thank author of this post/comment"To what end?"

From that Wikipedia article:

"These trolls feed off of the reactions of their victims because 'their agenda is to take delight in causing trouble.'"

In other words the more they are deleted or argued against... the more they are encouraged. It seems the troll(s) here are marginally capable of communicating in English. We need to be careful not to classify a native English speaker in the same category simply because they don't know English well.

Continuing from Wikipedia:

"Application of the term troll is highly subjective. Some readers may characterize a post as trolling, while others may regard the same post as a legitimate contribution to the discussion, even if controversial."

As Elaine pointed out these posts by Eve seem to be of questionable interest or usefulness on their own they have sparked some great discussions, including this one!

Wisdom from Wikipedia:

"Experienced participants in online forums know that the most effective way to discourage a troll is usually to ignore him or her, because responding tends to encourage trolls to continue disruptive posts — hence the often-seen warning: 'Please do not feed the trolls'."

Enough said! I vote what we honor Eve and her backwards wisdom.

Thank author of this post/comment"Libertad"

Well said :-)

When I first arrived in the ROU from tightly-controlled nanny-state Britain, it happened to be on the anniversary of the NO vote in response to the proposed military constitution back in the 1980s. I was greeted by a grand display of the "Flags of the 33" each saying "Libertad o Muerte."

While I'm not that keen on the muerte bit (yet, ) I dearly love the degree of personal liberty available within the ROU so unless there is clear evidence of destructive intent, disruption or personal attacks on participants I'm not in favour of censorship.

Many of us here are the lucky ones with the opportunity and the means to move and live here so it seems to me to be a bit mean-spirited to exclude wannabe hopefuls who are not yet as fortunate as us.

Having said that, I happen to know that UruDad has been going through tough times recently with a less-than-sane potential landlord so I can well understand the condition of his temper wrt apparent time-wasters at the moment :-)

May I wish you the very best of luck in finding a nice clean apartment WITH a sane landlord? I spent several early months here in less-than-desirable rentals complete with years of ground-in grime and it really got me down.

Thanks! (If only the grime had been ground in...) At this point, so long as it doesn't actually come with cats, I'd probably even take either an insane landlord or a dirty apartment. Having neither would be an entirely unexpected treat!

"At this point, so long as it doesn't actually come with cats..."

The last grot-box I rented (a crumbling farmhouse @ 180 U$S/month) came with two outdoor dogs who followed me to my chacra once the house was semi-habitable. They became indoor dogs during the very cold winter of 3 years ago and managed to retain their status. One was run over by a truck 18 months ago but the other is still with me :-)

Congratulations UruDad, you've passed over the threshold that separates the visitors with high standards and the here-to-stay tranquilo types! We all have our fair share of horror stories, when you look back the bad stories are actually the funniest to tell and often the most fondly remembered, the good stuff all blends together too easily! Its character building I say :)
