Alternatives to DSL?

Just wondering other people who may be relying on their internet connections for work what other reliable options there may be besides DSL in Uruguay?

I've been trying for 4 weeks now to get AntelData DSL installed in my house and I'm still waiting and waiting. I need a backup asap in case they flake again.

Any options over satellite worth considering?

Are any of those mobile usb services worth it?

Anything else I may not be aware of?

Thanks in advance!

Try dedicado. They're speeds are slower now, but they seem to have quick installation times and used to offer the best upload speeds.

I would NOT sign a contract for mobile USB internet until you've used it on a prepaid basis and know it will meet your needs. On that note it is probably good bridge till you get the ADSL installed.

What are their installation issues... they were timely in their installations with me (long time ago), Scott and Ken more recently.

The other companies offering ADSL are just reselling Antel's.

What city are you located in? Neighborhood?

"ANTELDATA ADSL 30G plan"

Hi,

The plan I have :

ANTELDATA plan name: ADSL MOVIL 30Gigas

What I get:

-3G modem..

-ADSL 2Mbps download / 256 Kbps upload (I think they will upgrade it soon)

-Phone line for incoming lines (I chossed not to have outbound phones enabled)

-30 Giga of data download allowance (ADSL + 3G), after this you pay a bit per Mbps...but for my work I never reach the limit

How much I pay per month:

598 pesos IVA included..

What I use it for without major issues:

-VPN client connection to the US

-Web

-Outlook

-Skype

-Cisco IP Phone (VoIP)

-Remote desktop connection via VPN

-Gotoomeeting

-How fast I got it working?

3G 6 hours since I signed the contract

ADSL 3-4 working days since I signed (I had phone line installed in my flat, but not enabled, the guys from the telcom come first to enable it..after this, the ANTELDATA guys come with the modem). I live in Cordon, a downtown area.

Regarding your delay:

If you do not speak spanish, get somebody to help you chase the status of the order with your contract number. Bear in mind if the guys of the telco come and do not find you at home, they will not worry about coming back soon etc...

I am surprised of the waiting time...are you outside Montevideo??

Overall experience:

It is not a high speed, but it is not too bad either for what I do, keeps me going low cost, and with a backup..the thing with the 3G is that you depend on how good is the signal at your place...may be you can borrow one to check out how it works in your place..

Dedicado I would not recommend really...they are dodgy cheaters in my opinion, Wireless always has more delay..bear in mind if you use voip a lot.. If you are very piss off with ANTEL you may just get some other 3G offer from CLARO, TELEFONICA...although they are in my opinion cheaters as well, one is from Carlos Slim , a dodgy Mexican Millionaire..and the other from the spanish that had been doing cheating since Hernan Cortez times around here!!!

If you really want to go corporate segment, you can go to TELMEX (from Claro and the Slim millionaire) They have a wireless offer that works well, but is not cheap, Telefonica has the same sort of thing as well...

Generally speaking the state option ANTEL has the most technically solid infrastructure, since it is not a profit driven, under invested company..true they are slow in customer service for the same reasons!!!

Well, at least we use ANTEL its profits to try to balance our fiscal blackhole paying external debt and pensions to the old/poor..while the Claro and Telefonica money ends up it the pocket of some Mexican / Spanish shark

I hope this helps and good luck

I hope this helps

I am not happy with Dedicado's customer service. But I find their network and tech support to be outstanding. I've been a customer of Dedicado since June of 2005. I've also been a customer of Antels ADLS since March of 2006.

In the beginning I got a Dedicado line of 384/384k. No one else had 384K upload speeds. Then I upgraded my Dedicado to 512/512k. At that time you could get I think 256k upload from Antel with their expensive business service.

When my ANTEL ADSL service was 2M/192k Dedicado was my connection of course, except for when I had a large download. I have an icon to click to switch between them. Now that I have the 4m/512k ADSL service I prefer that and only use Dedicado for backup purposes.

Unlike the 3G systems which often have marginal signal strengths and overloaded cell towers, the Dedicado network is fixed, point to point wireless links.

A directional antenna is mounted on your roof aimed at the Dedicado tower. There is no variance in the signal strength and my usual upload speeds were higher than the service I paid for, so I doubt they overload the network.

Anytime there was a problem and I called they immediately checked and resolved the issue. Unfortunately their customer service has been less useful and for almost two years they send the invoices to an incorrect address and I can't get it corrected. I also found when you get new service it is installed very rapidly, but when you move is a different story.

My real problem with Dedicado now is that their network is slow compared to the ADSL offerings now available.

My experience with all the 3G providers is that the service can be very flaky and it is also very dependent on exactly where you are using it. A friend got the Claro service and after about 5 months they finally canceled the contract and gave her a complete refund.

I think the 3G problems are basically a combination of overselling the service, ie: overloaded cell towers and exaggerating the actual service areas. It may be technically true that they cover the entire country, because it will fall back to a gsm mode in non-3g areas. But a customer will NOT be happy when that happens.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 3729822510
