About non-smoking law in Uruguay.

It applies to ALL enclosed public places, including working places, restorants, malls, buses, bars, night-clubs, private clubs, whatever. NO smoking areas are allowed, if they are enclosed. No "smokers-clubs" are allowed either". Some restorants and bars have terraces or are allowed to put tables on the sidewalk. In those places, people can smoke. But they can't if the restorant close it with plastic courtains to keep them from the rain or winter cold. So smokers have their options reduced in winter. Basically, smokers can only smoke in the street or at homes. Other measures help with the anti-tobacco campaign. The companies are forced by law to occupy half of the surface of the cigarette boxes with the Health Ministry anti-propaganda. And, beleive me, you cannot remain naive about tobacco if you see the photos that they publish there! Brands including the word "Light", or any other word that may make consumers think it's a less harmfull cigarette, are prohibitted. Tobacco companies, are also not allowed to make propaganda in sports or youth events. About enforcement... Uruguayans tend to be obedient when they buy the idea. And even smokers bought the idea behind this law. The law is enforced, anyway. The way they found for this is fining the owner of the restorant, bar, office, etc.. Any user can call the police and the owner would be fined. So they are the "police" in their own place. They will kindly ask smokers to stop smoking or quit (mostly unaware foreingners), or expel them if they persist (haven't seen any case). It had worked.

Thank author of this post/comment"Cigarettes"

The whole world is engaged in persecuting us poor tobacco addicts. When undertaking long haul flights nowadays I always route myself through airports which still have smokers' ghettos.

Tabare's last act as Prez was to further increase the price of cigarettes a few days ago... over the last 3 years the price has nearly doubled in peso terms. With a collapsing pound sterling, the price of 20 local cigarettes has risen from 0.78 GBP to 2.45 GBP.

I have 4 unopened boxes left but after they are gone, I will be joining the ranks of the workers and rolling my own cigarettes once more because of my iron elbow :-)

I'm all for people rights, that includes myself.

We know that big Tobacco Companies with all the new laws in the United States they will be flooding the Third World with advertising.

I quit 32 years ago, but I smoked for 17. I started an early age in Uruguay because it was a MAN thing and the advertising I believe was a big part of me starting to destroy my Lungs.

My Wife never smoked, but her Mom died from Lung Cancer, her Sister and Aunt big smokers for years, now they Travel with a OXIGENE TANK on the shoulders.

I developed a mild case of COPD , that changed my active life.

Tabare Vasquez a Doctor himself tried to save lives in Uruguay.

Patrick your Iron elbow should be a good reason to stop smoking and stop wasting money and health.

Also I remember to read that sometimes you are Driving without the seat belts? Please don't and that will be another story close to home.

You're right but its the one addiction that I cannot break. In my youth I got addicted to various nasty substances and got over all of them in a couple of weeks. I can (and do) break my food addiction annually and fast for 6 weeks but tobacco won't let me go.

The best I've achieved was 3 months, 3 weeks and a day... where each day was slightly worse than the previous. I would have continued for longer but all 12 of the employees bought me a carton of Marlboros and told me to smoke them or find a new set of staff :-)

Yes, the ban applies to all enclosed public places, and extends into many privately owned spaces as well, such as those you list, Alberto.

I know several smokers who have successfully switched their addiction from cigarettes to electronic cigarettes, which are less harmful to the smoker and which produce no second-hand smoke. Unfortunately, their use is banned in Uruguay.
