Is Tennis very popular?
Is Tennis very popular? After reading another post I was wondering if Tennis a very popular sport in Uruguay. I know that Soccer is the main sport.
There are many tennis courts around Montevideo, though I can't say if they play professionally.
Tennis is mildly popular in Uruguay, although Uruguayan players have not been as successful as the Argentinian and Chilean ones. Marcelo Filippini is Uruguay's most successful player, winning five singles titles, reaching the quarterfinals at the 1999 French Open, and achieving a rank of #30 in 1990. The Uruguay Davis Cup team currently competes in Group I of the Americas regional Zone, and the Fed Cup team competes in Group I as well. Pablo Cuevas is currently the highest-ranked Uruguayan male player.
What other countries is Tennis popular in?
There is also Japan, or maybe it is popular just because of their anime's (animation) about Tennis but it I haven't heard Japan entering or winning an international Tennis competition. It is always the Brazilians, Chilleans, Americans and Argentinians who reigned over tin these said sports. I think the only time Japan can win over the other countries in Tennis is through animation. This is what I am talking about:
I heard Pablo Cuevas has narrowly made it in to compete in the US Open...I wonder if Uruguayan's are interested in this at all, tennis doesn't seem very big here
It always seemed popular to me in Pocitos as they are several tennis courts here.
