| Anyone for a game of squash? I am hoping to get back into playing squash this year. It would be great to find someone interested in a regular social game or even an occasional game. Let me know if you are interested.Expert Page: House Sitters for Uruguay |
| "MVD Squash Scene"
Hi Lionel, I'm a USian who lived in MVD for a while last year (I'm no longer there), and found a squash club where I played regularly. In Pocitos, there is a club that used to be called Libertad Squash, but I believe it changed its name a few months ago. It's on the East side of Libertad, between Guayaqui and Gabriel A. Pereira. If your Spanish is decent, you can just show up at the club, probably between 5pm and 9pm or so during the week and the girl at the desk will find you a game. Coming from the US, I was familiar with rankings where 1.0 is a novice and 6.0 is a pro. At this club, being in ?division? "primero" is probably for 4.5+, "segundo" is 4.0-4.5, and "tercero" 3.5-4.0. Those are just terms they would use to try to figure out who to pair you up against. A handful of the players there speak decent English, and those who don't are also quite friendly. I had many good games with many different people. If you have a car or are out Carrasco way, there's Club Carrasco on the west side of Arocena, just a block or two off the Rambla. I never got a game there, but their courts look a bit nicer (tho Libertad was renovating theirs a few months ago, so maybe they're better now). I hope that helps. |
| "Clarifying Showing Up"
Rereading my post, I made it sound as if the first time you show up they'll find you a game right then. While that might actually happen, the more likely scenario would be for you to give the desk girl your phone number, when you're available to play, and a guess at the skill level of your opponents. She'll then call you in subsequent days (often day of) to schedule a match for you. |

| "Thanks"
Thanks MateoWhen in Montevideo I am often staying just a couple of blocks from the centre in Libertad. It is now called Pocitos Arena and they have refurbished the courts. I dropped in there last week and saw their quite nice glass backed courts. Hope to get a game next week. My Spanish is pretty limited but once on the court I won't need too much. Sounds like their ability levels will cover mine OK. I am far from pro but also far from novice. I played A grade squash in Oz but that is variable at different locations too. Thanks for your info. If you are back this way look me up for a game. Expert Page: House Sitters for Uruguay |
| "De Nada"
Sounds like you had it mostly figured out already. I do have my squash gear in the country, so I'll look you up beforehand if I make it over to MVD at any point.I look forward to playing on the refurbished courts. When I played there, there was an extra dimension of challenge in that the ball might hit the edge of a rickety floorboard and careen off 20 degrees from the angle one would expect it to, about half a second before striking it. As fun as that was, I think I prefer new floorboards. And if you haven't already learned the terms for on the court, here they call a "let" a (phonetically) well'-tah. Not sure how to spell it. And when there's a stroke, you just say "punto." And if the score is tied, instead of saying "two all" you say "dos equales." |
| "I have enough handcaps"
I have not played for nineteen months so I have enough handicaps without wonky floorboards - a few extra kilos and some muscles that will need stretching. Thanks for the Spanish lesson, I appreciate it. I will be prepared a little bit. Do they play point a rally to 15 or point on service to 9? I have my fiancee to "hold my hand" a bit regarding Spanish and getting started but I hope to get beyond that before too long. Expert Page: House Sitters for Uruguay |

| "PaR to 11"
Hmm, when I was there, I think they were playing the "new" format of point a rally to 11, but I'm not positive. A good format if your fitness is inferior to your opponent. Although, most of the guys I play with here play the (even official ladder match) games back to back without the official 90 second break in between games. |
