| VAT Refund for Tourists In Uruguay, when you shop (till you drop), you’ll be given back 85.97% of the VAT you paid in your purchases.This benefit applies to the purchase of leather goods, knitting, food, drink or national origin crafts (made in Uruguay). Premier Tax Free is the only operator licensed to offer VAT refund service for being the winner of the tender boosted by the government in 2008. According to the approved regulation, foreign visitors and non-resident Uruguayans will be entitled to receive a VAT refund on purchases made during their visit and which are to be exported outside the country. Merchandise must be produced in Uruguay and tourists must validate their refund form with a customs stamp upon departure from the International airports or ports of Uruguay. Exit points eligible for reimbursement management are: * Carrasco Airport * Laguna del Sauce Airport * Port of Montevideo * Port of Colonia |

What will stop Resident Uruguayans from giving all their receipts to a friend who is a foreign visitors or non-resident Uruguayan? |

The receipts would have to be timed to coincide with the dates of the visitor's stay and except for eating out, I can't see many residents going wild and buying themselves lots of "leather goods, knitting or national origin crafts" just because of possible IVA refunds :-) Luckily, I have a neighbour who knits and seems happy to sell me her sweaters sin papeles. |

I don't even think "eating out" is included (though you do get a 10% discount on that if you pay by credit card in a restaurant!). Other than that the discount is very limited. Not only is it only on crafts, knittng, leather and packaged food and drink, it must also be MADE in Uruguay, which narrows down your choice even more.Still, if anyone just went on an uncontrollable shopping spree in Manos del Uruguay then maybe we can make out a deal as I'm about to go through the airport :) |

It sounds like a lot of work for not much benefit... I suppose it will be a sales pitch for visiting Uruguay that in the end will be more of an irritation than a benefit.It doesn't seem to me that most facturas (receipts) list what country someone is manufactured in! I look forward to a report from Elaine AFTER she has gone through the airport and the process. |
| "VAT 9-point refund."
The 9% discount for "turistic activities" is applicable year round and for both foreigners and locals. It applies to restorants, hotels, and I suppose car rental (not sure, I've never rented in Uruguay...), even if you are not doing tourism. You have to pay with a Credit Card. In fact, it's not a discount but it will appear as a refund in your CC account. Not espectacular, but at least it pays for the waiter's tip! But this "automatic" VAT refund is not for shopping as the one for foreigners mentioned by Jacqualine; don't expect to see this refund for your buys! |
