Mexican roasted coffee beans in Montevideo

Thank author of this post/commentDear residents of Uruguay,

This is about good quality and affordable coffee in Uruguay. Although I’m not a coffee addict, I do like my coffee. I was very disappointed that the quality of most of the coffee sold or served in Montevideo was far below my expectation. It was even more shocking when I learned that often coffee is roasted with refined sugar to mask the poor quality.

As a resident of Mexico I am used to the Mexican (Oaxaca or Chiapas) high quality in-expensive coffee. I’m also a part-time resident of Montevideo and a businessman and although I know that doing (retail) business in Uruguay is a challenge that you should not take up lightly, I am very motivated to explore my opportunities.

In my research I would like to have a little bit more insight in how other (ex-pat) residents of Uruguay experience the quality and price of the coffees available and how a Mexican coffee would be welcomed.

It is my goal to bring to Uruguay

- a high quality roasted coffee bean (Oaxaca and Chiapas)

- offered in a 500 gram package

- price goal is 100 Uruguayan pesos per 500 gram package

The coffee will not be offered through the well known supermarkets, but through alternative sales point.

If you are interested please post a reply or send me an email.

Thanks you.

Paulus

are the flash gordon of the coffee world to uruguay? come to save everyone of us :)

whilst i like coffee and Oaxaca inparticular - you'll have to get the locals off the tea (sorry dont know the name not tried) first. When I was 17 we used to hang around street corners drinking the highest % of beer avaliable, here at 17 it's whos got the best flask for the hot water for the tea...

ood luck anyway

Its great to see such determination in the face of nasty coffee :-)

Two points.

First of all I don't think that all the raw coffee in the ROU is bad... in my view its what local processors do with it than spoils it for me. I've given local people sample cups of what I consider to be good blends/roasts processed in Italy and vacuum packed using Brazilian, Columbian, Costa Rican and other SA raw materials but most didn't like the taste. From the small sample I took, it seems that Uruguayos actually like the coffee found here :-)

Second, as jonathanmvd says the national addiction here is mate and the amount of coffee drunk is small.

Among my Uruguayan friends in the 20-35 age range they drink mate (obviously) but in the mornings they drink "cafe con leche" which is basically hot milk with instant powdered coffee stirred in. I have also seen this offered for breakfast at many hotels and b&b places across the country.

That is not to say there isn't a market for good coffee here, but it is a small market. First off the population is tiny, secondly the average income is very low so you haven't got many people with a disposable income who splurge on good coffee, thirdly import taxes here are insanely high and so drive up the price of anything that may otherwise be affordable. These things have to be considered as well as the national mate addiction.

I don't drink much coffee these days. In restaurants they don't serve coffee. They serve espresso. It is satisfactory for espresso.

Inside Disco supermarket in Punta Carettas Shopping the is a small store that sells various coffee beans (and will grind them for you if you want) including Colombian Coffee and others. I don't think anyone who lives in MVD and brews coffee at home has an excuse to complain about the availability or quality of coffee available here.

Now, more choices would of course be great. But from a business perspective I think it is a very tough road: Small market, low price, low profit, difficult distribution (outside Grocery stores).

The locals get their caffeine fix with mate so your market would seem to be the few that don't pick up some decent beans somewhere already.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 4263141362
