Looking for a slow cooker!! (crockpot)

Thank author of this post/commentWith the heat being quite unbearable at times and cooking in the kitchen during this weather completely miserable, I would like to use a slow cooker. They are no where to be found and this really has me thrown for a loop. I can only imagine how the cooks here would so love these wonderful appliance, thus getting them out of the kitchen on these hot days, as well as not heating up the place.

I've often thought in a quite silly mind that if I looked into importing protocol, then I could start an importing empire of slow cookers only and become a millionaire! *chuckle*

So my question is, does anyone know where I can get a beloved crockpot??? I desperately want one!!

Many thanks!

I know I've seen them someplace... I tried doing some browsing at the stores with websites but didn't see any and unfortunately you have to browse category by category which makes it a bit tedious...

Below is a link to something I found, but probably not exactly a crockpot.

You might print a photo from images.google.com or download a photo to your phone and then show it in a store and ask if they have it, what they call it, and who might have them.

Also, remember, the cooks in Uruguay might have no interest in such a thing... because they way they learned to cook... well... didn't use them.

Look at mops. If you have someone that cleans your house and you buy what we would call a "mop" it will never be used. They use a towel at the end of a mop stick.

Thank you very much!

I took a peek at the link and I'm intrigued. It looks like it might be a convection oven, BUT this is much better than heating up the kitchen and I am going to investigate this option. It would mean cooking differently from the "good ol'" crockpot recipes, but if I can at least do similar things, then I'm hip to getting one.

Yes, I have found the same things with looking online. Having to go through everything and looking at pictures. I also am quite familiar now with the Uruguayan perspective on new and what does not concern them. It's too bad, sometimes, because they really miss out.

I've been here for 7 months now and think I've got the mop stick and towel thing down pretty good.. only after looking high and low for a mop! =) I have much more to learn.

I am still optimistic that there might be a source somewhere in Uruguay where I can get my beloved crockpot though.

Once again, thank you for taking the time!

Also keep an eye out for anyone coming from the USA that could tuck a crockpot in their suitcase... just make sure they unpackage it so it doens't look "new".

Don´t laugh! I brought a box containing a set of Correlle dishes in my suitcase and a memory foam mattress topper for our unbearably hard "orthopedic" mattress we bought here UY. The mattress topper weighed 45 pounds and was packed in a cardboard box. When I went through customs, I was paniced the aduana was going to rip it open with his utility knife. Luckily the man behind me spoke better Spanish than I did and explained what it was, so the aduana let it pass. Neither I nor anyone I know has had problems with the aduanas, as long as the items brought in are household goods. My stepson even sent a flat screen TV from New Jersey some years ago. I think they´ve cracked down since then....

Too bad about the crock pot issue. I´d love to have one, too. ´Course you´d need a converter to use it if it is from the US.

Thank author of this post/comment"Smuggling and Crockpot Converting"

I've thought about having a friend send me one from the States as a "gift", since I have no one who will be coming here. I figured after paying for shipping and the cost of a medium nice one it'd be $100-$125. Well worth it though.

When I came here I came with my maximum allowed luggage and each bag was filled with about 2 lbs under the weight limit. I even maxed out the carry-on and personal luggage allowance. Got busted on weight for my carry-on in Brazil though, and the stewardess made it go below in cargo. I was a bit unnerved since it was not locked, had my Xbox and computer monitor in it. My son and I got a lot of looks when we pushed our carts with 10 bags on them out the door at the airport. If the crockpot hadn't weighed so much it would have been in there for sure!

I'm in great luck! My husband to be is an electronics technician and knows exactly what to do to make sure things convert and that they do not get fried here. You should see him when rain comes. He runs around the house and unplugs everything. He says the surges that occur from rain and storms kill more appliance than anything. We usually end up with people coming to our door after them asking him to fix their TVs.

If I happen upon a place to get crockpots in Uruguay I'll post and let everyone know.

I am totally new here, but I have one I might consider selling (because I have two). It s brand new in the box (I bought one for me and one for my mom, but the movers packed both). I will have to think about it, but it might be an option?

Even if that doesn't work out, every electronic I have bought here has been nowhere near as good as from the USA. It is highway robbery what they ask and what they deliver. Especially electrolux! Biggest offender!

Oh, so my point is, have it shipped in. You will pay less in the long run by just getting a good quality one.

Don't forget the voltage issue/transformer!!! DO NOT plug a 110V crockpot directly in!

Yes, absolutely a transformer, unless it is rated to 220 (which I doubt for a cp). ; )

Thank author of this post/comment"Red duct tape"

I like to wrap my 100 volt stuff with red duct tape near the plug... especially when I have a power strip with US style outlets but 220V... helped me save myself more than a couple of times.

OH OH! I'm hoping that you made my day!....?? I'd be very interested in discussing purchasing the spare crockpot from you!!! Send me a message if your game on selling it!!

Yes, I absolutely know about the voltage issue. I'm lucky and have someone who knows all about that to take care of making sure it would not get fried. I'd need to know the specs on it in order to look into what transformer I'll need to get.

Oh to think that "Smothered Steak", "Chilie Chicken" and numerous other wonderful delights might be possible again during the summer without heating up the place!

Please please hubby say yes! *crossing fingers*

Definitely recipe sharing in the works! I need to hit that forum next when I have some time.

Melo is about an hour bus trip from the Brazilian border and Rio Branco. I believe I heard somewhere that our city population is between 80, 000-100, 000.

I think this is the one I have.....well I have two. I could probably sell both ???? If you guys are really wanting one. I have two small kids, so the maid does most of the cooking. Both are new in the box.

(can't post link - go sears dot com and enter Hamilton beach 5.5 slow cooker)

Hubs said yes, if I didn't think I would need them. I will sell at least one, have to think of a price. Maybe we should move that to a private message. Do we have pm boxes on this board?

Oh Kathy is just goofing off.. I think... *looking sideways for confirmation*

Which of the 5.5 Hamilton Beachs is it? The stainless steal looking "Premier" or the white with veggies on the side one?

Oh heck I don't care much. The size is fine and I'd really like one. Figure out your price. And don't forget to throw in the cost of shipping. Wonder what that literally is..? Hmm

I have no idea what shipping would be, but it's pretty heavy because of the cast iron (??) or ceramic(??) container. If that doesn't kick your butt, the import tax will. :(

I sent you a pm asking for your email! :)

I will send you the link, but it's the nice big oval one, stainless, that can sear meat. I have to double check the actual model numbers, but if not exactly that one, very similar.

Do you ever come to mvd?

Laurie, Fernandino is definitely more evil than I am! I was only pulling your virtual leg.

After all, if I can stand to cook lasagna in the oven on a day like today, who needs a crockpot? Chau!

Admittedly you are a woman to be admired, being tough enough to use the oven in this weather!

And I give you two points for being a great sparing partner in jokes!! =P

Laurie, besides, I don´t think either F or I would fit in the crock pot, much less both of us! I mean, he´s a bull albeit a young one, and you haven´t seen me! Definitely bigger than a crock pot can hold! ;-)

chilelivin I sent a PM back with my email. =)

Import tax? How so if you are in Montevideo? I'm Uruguay also.

Unfortunately we travel very little to Mont. I can though, look and see if a couple of relatives who live there have any plans of coming this way anytime soon. Let me look into this... Also I know that the bus lines ship packages back and forth between here and there. I think it might be cheaper.
