Generally speaking, there is a total ban on the importation of used cars. I spent several years trying to import Mein Kampfer (an aged but beloved Frankia motor home) as well as Adolf (a series 5 BMW motorcycle) but whatever tricks, schemes and other evasions I tried, the answer was NO. They even rejected my 1962 vintage Ransomes cylinder motor mower.Returning Uruguayo citizens are allowed to import their own vehicle subject to all manner of conditions but even in this case, the downside seems to be that they end up with an enormous annual patente charge which assumes that they imported the vehicle new and were hit for very large import duties even though they didn't and they weren't. There are a few special exemptions for importing vehicles suitable for disabled people as well as lesser charges for importing used tractors but generally speaking, the importation of used vehicles is a big no-no and worse still, the authorities seem tireless when it comes to tracking them down and confiscating them. |
