Buying a Car in Buenos Aires to Bring to MVD

Thank author of this post/commentI'm interested in buying a car but they're so darned expensive in Montevideo. Does anyone have any thoughts / experience with buying cars in Buenos Aires and then bringing them to Montevideo? Thanks!

Its doable on a short term basis as a tourist but if you are living here, its likely that the car will be confiscated after a few months... especially if a neighbour gets jealous and denounces you.

It happened to an Argentinian neighbour of mine who lives here last November.

The only person I know who seems to get away with it is an American ex-pat with a large Chinese copy of a WW II BMW motorcycle and sidecar with imaginary Chinese number plates and a sheaf of incomprehensible Chinese paperwork :-)

As Patrick says, you can do it but it is considered smugling. No matter if you are on a tourist visa. If someone can prove you live here you may be in trouble. There is a special group in the Police that goes for Customs faults. This group earn a percentage of what is confiscated so they are pretty much motivated to go out hunting for suspicius foreing plates.

The Chinese may have not been discovered yet, or he may have already started the paperwork to import the motorcycle.

Cars and more especially used cars are very expensive here.

When I first arrived 4 years ago I set aside 5000 U$S to buy an old car but all the ones I looked at for sale at that price were rolling wrecks. I finally bought a 9 year old Nissan B13 saloon car with 150000kms on it for 6500 U$S.

The country has become more prosperous since then so when I sold it with 200000kms on the clock last November, I got 8000 U$S for it.

You can buy used cars from dealers. They will probably cost you more but you may get a few months guarantee.

You can buy cars privately. The custom here for selling a car is to park it somewhere it will be seen and to place a bottle on the roof.

You can look online on mercadolibre.com (link below.)

You can buy a copy of Sunday's edition of El Pais (a newspaper) which has a large cars classified section.

Best of luck.
