There are plenty of options for furniture and many items are locally made and it always includes delivery (at least for the "new" items). We bought some items at Divino. I don't like their website as it is flash based and they don't show any prices.
Divino is not the cheapest place, however, their location on Ave Italia is huge (unlike at the mall). The selection is good.
After wandering around the store for an hour or more deciding what we wanted, it dawned on us that we hadn't been bugged by a sales person. In fact there didn't appear to be any sales people at all!
Finally we asked someone and they said you had to take a number at the front! Oh oh! We missed that part when we walked in.
At least they had a comfy sofa to wait for our number to be called. Now we had a personal sales rep to handle all our needs.
Once the order was written up we had to pay which seemed to take forever. Some of the items we bought were priced in dollars and some in pesos and we paid with dollars, pesos and will pay for one of them items when they deliver.
The cashier wrote the serial numbers of all the 100 dollar bills on the both copies of the receipt and then had me verify he wrote them down properly.
The best deal was a nice wooden table I purchased from their "outlet". I like a plan table for my computer and the one I have now is a little bit small.
In the "outlet" section of Divno they have an odd selection of stuff and some dining room tables up high where you can't really see them. One was marked 1, 490 pesos (US$60). There was another one a bit larger without a price.
Surprisingly the larger one came with a whopping price of 865 pesos (US$35.74). I bought that one and still haven't looked at it to see what is wrong with it. I suppose it has a nasty scratch or gouge out of the top.
It is study which is all I need. They weren't nice enough to give us free delivery for that! However, they did call a delivery company and we took that home with us. The delivery cost 220 pesos (US $9), and we rode back with it, saving a 100 pesos or so taxi fare.
I'll certainly be back to the Outlet department at Divino.

I'm in love with the furniture on that website. I can't understand the words, but I do love the pictures. Very pretty. I want that store here. I bet if it was here, though, the prices would increase unbelievably.

Lee-This may be repetitive, but getting a credit card price and cash (USD) price will save money for major purchases. Cash saves 8 - 10% with most merchants. Devino is one of the exceptions; they're too big for this game.

Of course those merchants that give you a discount for cash are at risk for losing their visa and mastercard merchant status.Which are the best remates to buy furniture?

I don't like pre - made furnitures. Does somebody here know where I could hire a good carpenter who could make my custom design ideas for my new house. I would also want to know where I could buy the best lumbers and wood stocks within the area. I'm not against pre - made furniture stores in Montevideo but I would like a personal touch on the thing that will be inside my house.

Maybe you could find all kind of wood stock in Montevideo. Uruguay construction wood and timber is a major part of the timber and lumber export from Uruguay. Timber importers and merchants should look to Uruguay for a wide supply opportunity and even you Leanne might find what you need on your to be custom made furniture. Your only problem now is the skilled carpenter.

It is really common to walk into a departmental store and have to wait to be served. I hold the view that with excellent customer service, you can even overlook the delay that might come your way.I agree with what poster #4 is suggesting. I am one of those people that fancy pre-made furniture but they are normally more expensive than getting a carpenter to handle that for you.

The great advantage of buying pre-made furniture is that you can get it almost instantly. Here in Colonia Valdense we have a superb carpenter by the name of Milan who can build you anything you want. The quality is outstanding and he built me a set of kitchen units for 5000 U$S which would have set me back 30k in Europe.
However, there is a downside and its speed... or rather a lack thereof. I ordered my dream kitchen in November 2007 and on 1st December 2008 I dressed myself up as Father Christmas and visited his workshop to tell him how disappointed the reindeer would be with yet another kitchenless Christmas. He managed to install it on 24th December 2008 :-)

I've seen this place in Punta Carretas - its nice, but very expensive. In fact there are many really nice interior design shops around Pocitos and Punta Carretas but I find the prices to be quite ridiculous (probably because everything is imported and their import tax here is insanely high).I was at Tristan Narvaja Feria on Sunday (this is a HUGE flea market that takes place on Tristan Narvaja street and its surrounding area every Sunday) and there was lots of handmade furniture, wicker chests, and second-hand and antique furniture for sale at good prices. This is definitely a place worth looking if you're searching for furniture (or anything for that matter! they sell EVERYTHING at this market!)

Online there are many options for buying furniture I personally don't mind importing items for myself well some smaller items for instance lamps and small fixtures etc. But there are many good local options for buying furniture just take the time to look.

"Buying Furniture Online in Uruguay"
A few places might let you place an order online... Tienda Ingelesa (food or furniture). Divino maybe, but they have a confusing website.Ordering furniture from outside Uruguay is probably not a reasonable option for most people considering the customs and shipping issues.

"buying furniture"
There are plenty of furniture stores in Montevideo. Many of them are along Calle Rivera and also along Avenida General Flores. Good, quality furniture is usually imported though, and therefore, relatively expensive.
