| Anything we should bring? We are retired Canadians planning to spend part of the winter in Uruguay. We've booked Spanish classes at Academia Uruguay and homestay for a couple of weeks until we explore housing options. I've picked up some suggestions about what is not available (or is very pricey) but I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions on things we should bring other than prescription medications (e.g. vitamins, pain killers, personal hygiene products, clothing). We'd appreciate any advice others can share. Thanks |

Clothing and footware is expensive here but most medicines seem to me to be reasonably priced. |

Remember, Uruguay is home to some 3+ million people. It doesn't lack any necessities of life.Bring your sense of adventure and enjoy life as a Uruguayan does. Leave your "stuff" behind as well as your preconceived notions. Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |
| "Reasonably Priced Medicines?"
Patrick, what's the secret to finding reasonably priced medications? Some medications that are by prescription only in the US are reasonably priced here, but I have found over-the-counter painkillers, for example, to be 3-10 times the price in the US (per equivalent dose). I don't use painkillers very often, but for some people that would add up. The last time I did the comparison, nutritional supplements in Uruguay were 2.5-3 times the price in the US (per equivalent dose). Part of the reason for the difference is that in the US it's common to buy these in bulk quantities (eg 500 pills), but here they are sold in much smaller amounts (eg 10 pills). Perhaps they are also sold in bulk here, and I just haven't looked in the right place? Or maybe I'm asking the wrong question entirely. Glen, what does a Uruguayan do when he has a headache? |

I'm not trying to contradict the others, but you'll find the prices of clothing and footwear reasonable compared to Canadian prices and there's not any HST or other additional taxes when you get to the cash. It's true, they've got everything you would need in the pharmacies etc.. One thing you might want to bring is a (or several) face cloths ... they don't seem to use nor sell them in Montevideo. |

"It's true, they've got everything you would need in the pharmacies etc"That is not a good impression to give people. Though of course, they do have a comprehensive selection and many of the medicines made by local laboratories, it is an area of ones life where not having something could have dire consequences. I have no idea about painkillers... but in Costa Rica they sold them by the individual pill. Better ask someone that has a headache that question! My apologies. Perhaps it's cultural but in Canada we have big pharmacy chain stores that sell everything, including prescription medicine. The point I was making to my fellow citizen was that she would find all of the same things in Uruguay that you can buy off the shelf in any drug store here. I really can't speak about prescription medication in Uruguay. |

I'm under orders to take several medicines each day because I've developed osteoporosis. My local pharmacies charge about 20% more than the mutualista pharmacy but on approaching several and pointing out that I require 730 diclofenac tabs a year and that I'd like to buy in bulk, I got no offers of discounts from the mutualista but a 40% discount from one of the local pharmacies if I buy 200 or more.I get similar discounts on calcium and vitamin D3 tabs and a stunning 50% discount on the triangular stomach tabs which are needed to counter the bad stomach-churning effects of the diclofenac. I'd agree that the everyday branded pain killers which are available from supermarkets are overpriced but I suspect that negotiations with local pharmacies would result in discounts. OTOH Canada has a reputation for doing medicines cheaply. |
