Help.......Need ALL information on retiring in Salto

Thank author of this post/commentI'm new to this website, so I'll just start here.

Can anyone give me any and all information on retiring in Salto? I understand it is a good town (department - what does that mean?) and it is much safer than other cities in Uruguay.

I'm specifically looking for long term apartment rentals and where/how to search for them.

I'm just in the planning stages, so I really need all of the information I can get. Plus, having someone here (perhaps, another American) that can answer questions and share things with me.

In reference to the Medical requirements to live there.........I understand there are no restrictions on entering and living there as long as you are honest about your health situation? I hope this is correct.

Many more questions to ask, but I'd like to start with the basics of getting there and the Apartment information.

Thanks..........Rick

I don't think that there are are Salto residents present on this board. As is often said, the best approach is to come down and see for yourself.

I've only visited Salto once but it seemed like a pleasant city.

"Departmentos" are roughly equivalent to administrative counties and the ROU has 19 of them.

I haven't heard of particular lawlessness in Salto but IME most of the Interior has low crime levels. Most crime here involves petty pilfering usually when the owner is absent. Crimes of violence are rare. In some more isolated cities (think very small values of "city") duelling still goes on in spite of it having been criminalised back in 1995 but its mostly between local rednecks and there is no compulsion to take part :-)

Out here in "the Interior" (ie not MVD or posher parts of the coast) the usual way of finding places for rent is to visit the local inmobilarias and to ask around. When I first arrived here in Colonia Valdense, there were no inmobilarios so I put a small ad up on the notice board at the local co-op store and had several places offered over the next few days.

You can enter the ROU on a freebie 90 day tourist visa without medical examinations. If you want to join a local health mutualista (co-op) then you'll have to undergo a medical inspection (questions, a brief physical and a blood test) before they accept you. If you wish to apply for permanent residency, you'll have to undertake a similar inspection.

I plan to be in Uruguay in May but not in Salto. I hope to meet up with Patrick and perhaps other members of this forum. I am concerned about the prices. I was told that Argentina was a bargain and believe me, it is not. Some costs here are higher than in Los Angeles and all costs here are higher than Arkansas. I mention this because all the posters on this forum have warned prospective Uruguay residents of the cost of living there. After my recon of Uruguay I will be returning to the U.S. and I will be in Springdale for a couple of weeks. If you let me know how to contact you I'll tell you everything I learned.

With the mega-strong peso and galloping domestic inflation, the ROU isn't cheap these days. Our current prosperity has resulted in transatlantic flights doubling in price over the last two years as the airlines cash in.

OTOH a look at history reveals that the current swing is quite normal and will probably result in yet another crash transforming us from expensive to cheap in external terms once more.

For a cheap cost of living, I'm advised that Colorado offers much better value than Colonia :-)

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 3981187184
