| furniture delivery and moving logistics So we've started the process of buying a chacra. It's about an hour north of montevideo in the middle of nowhere between las piedras and sauce. We're now in the process of working out the logistics of getting the entire family there and working out sleeping arrangements. The house(s) will be empty when we get there, and we'll likely beat our shipping container to the house. We're ok with living without our stuff for an extended period of time, but sleeping on concrete/tile floors will be tough. We're thinking we might buy some mattresses and/or beds quickly upon arrival so that the kids (and us) have a place to sleep. This raises other questions like where should we buy them and how do we get them home. I know a lot of places deliver, but I doubt they'll drive out of the city. We have plans to buy a small pickup fairly quickly, but that can't happen until after the DL and the residency meeting. We will have a rental car though. I should add that we have a lot of people.... 2 adults and 9 kids (some of them adult-sized). We can put 2 to 4 small kids on a single twin bed if we have to until the container arrives. But this still means half a dozen or more beds. So can anyone suggest a good solution to this situation? We've considered bringing sleeping bags and/or inflatable mattresses in the suitcases also. That might just be the best arrangement. It might also be possible to order the beds from the US and have them delivered while we're not there so that we have them already when we arrive. I'm not sure how I would work that out or who would be there to receive the beds, even if I could get delivery out there. Any ideas? brian |

Congratulations on your new home :-)You can import furniture and household effects tax free during the period between first applying for residency and getting your cedula but you will have to pay a refundable deposit or make a guarantee until the time you get your cedulas. I was on my own for my first 2 years so I bought a bare minimum of necessities (a bed, two tables, some utensils and a portable gas stove) with which I survived until the container arrived. I bought a new bed but found the rest of the necessities at local remates (auctions.) |

I don't think you'll have any problem with the furniture stores delivering what you need. Just ask. You might have to pay a little extra since you are out of town.I've always found places are quite timely about their deliveries and within Montevideo it's usually included in the price.
