Propane and diesel.

Thank author of this post/commentI may have asked these questions already, so please swat me if I have.

Many rural houses in the US have large propane tanks that they fill a couple times a year. Usually at truck comes out and fills them up. Is it possible to do this sort of thing in uruguay? I know it would be unusual.

I'm also thinking it would be useful to have a largish tank for diesel fuel to fill the cars and tractor, and maybe run a backup generator. Would this also be difficult or impossible to accomplish in Uruguay? How do you gas up your diesel tractor?

Why do you say it would be unusual?

I can't speak for the rural areas, but it is usual, even in big apartment buildings for stoves to use propane and order a 20lb thank whenever needed.

Some places also have natural gas.

I know 20lb tanks are normal. I'm talking about much bigger tanks, like 100 times that size bolted to a concrete pad. You'd have to have a propane truck come to you to refill it.

I have a neighbour with a big gas tank for powering his central heating and he gets a couple of refills each year (I'm not sure about the precise type of gas he uses.) I considered getting such a system/tank myself but opted for woodburners instead because firewood is cheap here in the campo and because I don't trust local plumbing systems not to leak :-)

I also have a Massey tractor which uses diesel. Unlike Europe, agriculture doesn't get cut price diesel here in the ROU and because I live near 3 filling stations, I buy diesel for the tractor when I need it. OTOH many of my neighbours either have their own diesel tanks or have bowsers (trailer mounted diesel tanks.)

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 2350496804
