Internet access

Thank author of this post/commentCould someone give me an idea what is required to setup internet access? Do I need the residency card or power bill? How long does it take from when you contact them to when you're up and running?

I won't be able to get antel ADSL since there's no wire yet. It looks like dedicado has 3 megabit service for business customers. There's also the 3G cellular internet service which I think is around 2 megabit. Either would be ok for what I need. Which one would be better?

Avoid Dedicado rural like the plague. They are a bunch of bandits who WILL rip you off if you are foolish enough to sign one of their appalling contracts. I signed up with them in 2006 before 3G was available and although they "only" charged me 90 U$S/month for a flaky 256 kb/s service at first, they were soon hitting me for 270 U$S per month. They lied to me and to my lawyer, they evaded me and tore up the legal notice to quit which I gave them so I sued them, reported them to Visa, set the government watchdog onto them and sparked Visan investigation but it still took me three months and lots of money to escape from their evil clutches.

Unless you have no other option, save yourself lots of money and grief by avoiding the horrid bandits in the first place.

You can buy a 2 meg 3G dongle from Ancel or an independent dealer. I use the unlimited fixed price tariff (called Plan PLSMS 2M L) which gives you unlimited up/down load for 819 pesos/month. As far as I know, the other 3G providers do not offer an unlimited service. You also get free SMS messages if you plug the dongle directly into your PC but the free messages do not work if you run the dongle through a USB router.

It might also pay you to ask to borrow one to try it out at home to see whether it works satisfactorily. To sign up for the Antel plan, you will need either your cedula or your passport.

I would agree with Patrick that Dedicado is not friendly to work with and I don't think they are price competitive anymore. They USED to have the highest speeds available, especially uploads. But the last time I had checked were behind the eight ball with their offerings.

As fas as G3... see if you can try something (prepaid is quick and easy to get) to make sure it will perform for you before signing a 2 year contract. All the carriers (3 choices) seem to tell you their service works in the whole country. Which may be true if you consider GSM or EDGE fall back from G3 to be "working".

Hi Glen and Patrick,

I will be moving to Uruguay by the end of the year and my biggest concern is the ability to use Skype. Are you able to use Skype reliably anywhere in the country or do I need to live in Montevideo? I had hoped to move to the Colonia area as i will be visiting San Fernando, Argentina on a regular basis.

Skype works fine over the 3G 2 meg Ancel system and used to work most days over the awful Dedicado Rural system.

With the high prices of Uru phone calls, I wouldn't be without it.

As long as your 3G modem doesn't fall back to GSM or EDGE it should be fine.

Watch out for claims that the modems work in ALL of Uruguay... with just some fine print mentioning that the 3G/HSDPA/Broadband is only in select areas (now including Patrick's house) and in other areas it will fall back to GSM or EDGE leaving you something about equal to dial up.

I don't use skype, but rather a hardware VOIP solution. Plug internet and a regular phone into my box and the phone works just like it was plugged into a landline. My hardware supports two lines, and I use two different services.

The underlying technology is about the same, but this avoids needing your computer on, or headsets....

I understand that I can make calls to the US and Canada using a device called MagicJack that requires less that premium internet speed. Has anyone used this product in Uruguay?

I talked to someone in Uruguay using MagicJack for about an hour with me in chicago. It worked great. I've had problems with skype talking to people here in chicago.

Thanks Brian. I understand that you can call from Uruguay to the US using Magicjack at no cost, and that if someone in the US calls Uruguay there is a rate charged to the person receiving the call.

I believe he told me that he was able to pick a phone number for the magic jack in whatever area code he wanted. So he picked one where family was. But for everyone else, it's long distance to that area code.

I'm planning to go this route. For me, it would be mostly for business so area code wouldn't matter. And for family, they're all in the same area code, so that's easy.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 1114229607
