So beautiful! You HAVE TO visit Rocha!
| So beautiful! You HAVE TO visit Rocha! I just spent 2 months living in Punta del Diablo (way up north near the Brazilian border) and it is one of the most incredible places I have ever seen. So beautiful, untouched, natural. There are so many absolute gems in the Rocha region of Uruguay - Cabo Polonio is a must see (a UNESCO protected site that has no electricity and no cars are allowed enter the town or surrounding dunes - quite simply wow!). There is also La Paloma and La Pedrera, both adorable little beach towns. If you need any more convincing check out these incredible pictures - you may never see more stars than you can see in northern Rocha, this is a place for stargazing for sure! |
| I've been in Rocha as well. We really fell in love with Rocha. From the so called 'palm pampa's' to the little beach villages, especially Barra de Valizas. It is close to Cabo Polonio, there is electricity and water, a few nice bars, supermarkets and some decent restaurants or places to get a snack. It isn't not that developed (yet) as punta de diablo while the sunset and the landscape is really stunning. Fishermen are present as well! There are some huge sand dunes, a laguna where you can swim or fish and you can do a very nice walk along the beach or through the sanddunes to Polonio. It is also possible to do a horse tour 'cabalgates' through the dunes. |
| Oh I did that walk across the sand dunes from Valizas to Cabo Polonio - absolutely incredible! Rocha has so many undiscovered gems! |
| I think you mean that no one wants to leave! I would love to buy a house there too....someday! |

| "we just got back from Rocha"
Hey Elaine, We just took our first trip out East and we, too were dazzled by everything. I saw the Southern Cross for the first time (a la' the CSN song), we saw enormous butterflies, praying mantises, dragonflies and toads, cows and sheep everywhere, birds and trees that look like Dr. Seuss illustrations, and spectacular sunsets, crashing waves; the list goes on and on! We rented a house that is less than a year old in Oceania. You can go to www.lapedrera.com.uy and find rentals for all those areas up there. My only complaint, and this may be because I didn't know where to shop, is we couldn't find high quality fresh veggies and fruits to eat. We are spoiled by our ferias in Montevideo. GO TO ROCHA BEFORE IT GETS TOO COLD! |

PeteWith regards to internet access, I am in La Paloma and have no problems using wireless internet. We have also used it in Aguas Dulces without any problems. Juana, I have to agree with you, it can be hard to find fresh fruit and vegetables, but you can. The trick is, you just need to find out when the trucks come and make the deliveries (which is pretty standard week to week), and then you can take your pick! |
