Thank author of this post/commentSomebody put this question to me recently but unfortunately I am NOT the person to be asking about retirement issues. If anyone else out there has information or opinions on this feel free to comment....

"I've been reading about retiree programs in South America, and saw something about Uruguay program. A website claims that it's possible to obtain Uruguayan passport via retiree program upon purchase of 100, 000 worth of property. Does anyone have information on this program -- is it legit or not?"

Some years there was a law through which this was possible without going through the residency process. By the end of the 90's this law was changed and now all immigrants have to pass the residency process and be between 3 to 5 years legal residents (depending on each particular case) in order to be able to apply for Uruguayan citizenship and then obtain the passport as a Uruguayan citizen.
